HOW IT HAPPENED:
After falling to North Greenville in the first game of the day, Nova Southeastern made heavy contact in the series finale, taking it right to the Crusaders in the opening stanza. Opening the second game of the doubleheader, the Sharks accrued a quick 3-0 advantage on
Christian Demby's three-score home run shot to left field in the first inning.
With freshman left-hander
Nathan Campbell (2-0) on the mound for the Sharks, NSU had the breathing room to build up a sizable advantage. Eventually earning the win, the St. Petersburg, Fla. native southpaw fronted the NSU defense through six innings, blanking the Crusaders for the first four consecutive frames.
In the meantime, the Sharks added three more runs in the third, courtesy of long balls to left field by both
Garrett Wolforth (solo) and
Brandon Chinea (two-run).
Ian Acevedo made it four home runs for the Sharks on the first pitch of the fifth and
Jeffrey Cyr chipped in an RBI single to center field for an eight-run NSU advantage.
Although NGU was able to plate runs in four of the final five innings, the Sharks added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth on
Samuel Duran's two-run double to the right center alley. Fighting off an NGU surge in the final frame, senior righty
Gil Torres closed the door on the final two batters to secure the 11-8 victory.
Opening the doubleheader at noon, North Greenville carried over hot hitting from opening night, scoring all but one of their 10 runs in the first four innings of the seven-inning tilt. Their plate approach quieted, the Sharks registered a lone run in the top of the fourth on a Demby homer to left field.
