HOW IT HAPPENED:
Giving way to snapping a nine-game Florida Tech win streak in Fort Lauderdale, freshman left-hander Nathan Campbell was simply dealing against the Panthers, tossing a complete-game win to open Saturday's doubleheader. Although the rookie allowed just two hits and a single run – delivered on a first-inning James Gronberg home run – the Sharks offense came to life to give him breathing room to work.

Trailing 1-0 early, NSU erupted in the bottom of the third after Brandon Chinea led off the frame with a double down the line. Garret Wolforth later converted on the base knock with a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 1-all, while Ian Acevedo and Christian Demby made it three straight scores for the Sharks.

NSU came back strong in the bottom of the fourth with Wolforth smacking an RBI singe down the left field line, and Acevedo pushing the ball to the same spot for a two-run single and a five-run advantage.

Working the full nine innings, Campbell (5-1) didn't allow his second hit until the seventh frame, extending his record to 5-1.

In the second go-around of the day, the Sharks got things moving early and often, opening up six consecutive scoring innings on Duncan Pastore's first-inning RBI double to cash in Daniel Irisarri's leadoff walk.

Chinea's second-inning RBI single to center field kicked off a three-run frame, followed by RBI from Irisarri and Wolforth. One more with Demby scoring on a third-inning error and the game began quickly swaying in NSU's favor.

After the Panthers retaliated with three runs of their own in the fifth to cut into NSU's lead, the Sharks scored on three consecutive batters scoring in the 3-4-5 slots, Wolforth reached as a hit batsman, Acevedo singled and Demby knocked in two with a single to left field. Rojas sealed things off for the Sharks, launching a two-run homer in the sixth to lock in the final 13-5 score.
Tossing four innings, Nik Sanders earned his first win of the season.

With the wins, NSU captured its third conference series of the year and edged up in the SSC standings behind Barry, who the Sharks defeated in the opening league weekend.

STATS OF THE DAY:
  • Acevedo, Demby and Chinea paced the squad on the day, hitting 5-for-9 (.556) in the doubleheader with five, four and one RBI, respectively. Acevedo and Demby each scored once, while Chinea crossed the plate four times.
  • Wolforth added four RBI on .429 hitting.
  • Advancing the scoring opportunities, NSU logged 6-of-8 successful steals.
  • In Saturday's games, NSU five NSU pitchers combined to hold FIT to just .156 hitting, paced by Campbell's .069 average against.
