HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Sharks broke out early with a solid plate approach, showing up Barry starter Nicholas Bralczyk, as NSU opened the game with consecutive walks by
Daniel Irisarri and
Nathan Chevalier, an outfield single by
Garrett Wolforth and capped by a grand slam blast by
Ian Acevedo to left center – NSU's second of the year.
Samuel Duran tacked on an RBI single up the middle and the Sharks held a 5-0 advantage, setting off a carousel of Barry pitchers.
Although Barry chipped a run off the lead in the second, Nova Southeastern reclaimed the score in the third, courtesy of a
Bryan Diaz RBI single to right center. The Sharks extended their lead in the fifth on an
Andrew Labosky RBI groundout.
Aiding the Sharks in gaining the upper hand, freshman starter
Duncan Pastore tossed a stellar start, going five frames with just four hits with only one unearned run in the outing. However, the night didn't fare as well for the bullpen.
With storm clouds encroaching on the game in the sixth, the Buccaneers laid into a pair of NSU relievers for five singles, a walk and four runs before
JP Williams finally settled Barry down, shutting down 3-of-4 batters faced and ending the Bucs' push with a pair of strikeouts.
After a pregame delay of an hour due to rain, the skies opened in the seventh but the teams finished the frame before going back into a delay. However, both defenses managed to keep scores off the board as NSU clung to a 7-5 lead.
Barry made its final push down the stretch in the eighth took on two additional NSU relievers, producing a pair of two out singles with Justin Lamazares trimming the lead and Chris Cabrera adding a two-run single for the go-ahead run. Although the Sharks put a runner aboard in the ninth, Hugo Casilla kept NSU from a rally of its own, earning his seventh save and the win for Ping-Chun Ho (1-1), 8-7.
