HOW IT HAPPENED:
The slowest offensive start for the Sharks in the series, the Sharks used a little small ball to put
Brandon Chinea in scoring position, reaching second on a sacrifice and third on a wild pitch. Third baseman and leadoff hitter
Duncan Pastore drove him in on a single into right field for the third-inning lead. After designated hitter
Andrew Labosky reached on an error, catcher
Garrett Wolforth found a gap in the right side for an RBI single and left fielder
Christian Demby added a sacrifice fly to build up a three-run lead.
In the third, the Fighting Knights also got their offense moving a little bit. Using a one-out walk and two consecutive singles, Alec Ojeda brought in one run and Byron Murray added a sacrifice fly to slice the NSU lead to a single score.
In the fourth, right fielder
Bryan Diaz singled and stole second – knocking the base out of the ground on the slide – going on to steal third on a double-theft. A bloop single into shallow right field tacked runs back up for the Sharks, as Pastore's two-out, two-RBI base hit pushed NSU back up 5-2 – Diaz and
Daniel Irisarri raced through the dish on the slow-developing fly.
Overcoming his own slow start to re-assert himself as the NSU player of the series, center fielder
Samuel Duran pulled a line-shot double past Lynn third baseman Murray to score Demby on a fifth-inning double. With Diaz reaching as a hit batsman, shortstop
Brandon Chinea knocked in two more on a double over the third base bag to send Murray diving again – then stole third and scored on a wild pitch as NSU started to pull away from the Fighting Knights with a four-run frame against reliever Kendrick Pico.
The Sharks got another solid performance out of
Matt Ornelas on the mound, going 4.0 innings in his first start of the month - with two runs allowed on six hits, striking out one with one walk. Senior
Kyle Kilbourne and junior
Ryan Maya worked well behind Ornelas after
Nik Sanders had to depart early from his outing – all three keeping the scoreboard clear. The Sharks' defense put in work all afternoon, scoring a pair of double plays and aiding the pitching staff to strand 12 Lynn runners.
Two utility field players shifted in to do some work in the pitching rotation as Pastore covered the eighth with a lone Lynn run and Demby stepped in for the ninth, closing the door on the 9-3 victory and the road sweep of the Fighting Knights.
