Early Offense Lifts NSU to Series Sweep of Florida Southern

Sharks extend win streak to five following 8-3 victory Sunday

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Highlighted by home runs from Ian Acevedo and Garrett Wolforth, Nova Southeastern grasped control in the early innings and never looked back, coasting to a series sweep of Florida Southern with an 8-3 win on Sunday afternoon. The Sharks struck for all eight runs in the first four frames before leaning on another solid outing from starter Duncan Pastore, who improved to 4-0 on the season following the victory. With the win, head coach Greg Brown runs his unbeaten streak to 15-0 in his career at home against the Moccasins.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Back in the lineup for the first time since Apr. 13, Acevedo didn't wait long to make an impact, tagging a no-doubt homer on the second pitch of the ball game. Samuel Duran added to the fast start, too, lacing a liner into center to hand the Sharks a 2-0 cushion in the bottom of the first.

One inning later, Nova Southeastern built the advantage to 6-0 thanks to an Andrew Labosky RBI-single, before Wolforth launched his second big fly in as many games with a deep shot to right center.

As Pastore racked up the zeroes, the offense kept producing, tacking on two more runs in the fourth. A Christian Demby sacrifice fly extended the margin to 7-0 until Bryan Diaz plated Wolforth with a double off the wall in left.

Florida Southern erased the shutout in the top of the fifth thanks to a pair of home runs by Christian Maglich and Zach Scott. Pastore would settle back in, though, posting a scoreless sixth before handing the ball over to Gil Torres in the seventh.

Together, both Torres and JP Williams would toss a combined three hitless innings to slam the door shut on the series sweep.

STATS OF THE NIGHT
  • With a stolen base in the sixth inning, Wolforth now has 10 on the season, making him the only player in the Sunshine State Conference with double-digit home runs and stolen bases.
  • Wolforth finished with a game-high three RBI, raising his team-best total to 51 on the year.
  • The Sharks' pitching staff failed to allow a hit past the fifth inning on Sunday.
  • Labosky scored three more times on Sunday, giving him six total runs for the series.
