LAKELAND, Fla. – Although the championship won't officially be decided until Monday afternoon, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional doubles title is guaranteed to be headed back with Nova Southeastern after both
Natalie Espinal and
Chantal Nosievici, along with
Zala Dovnik and
Nika Kozar advanced to the finals on day three of the tournament. Personally, Kozar can make it a clean sweep in her first event with the Sharks after also earning a hard-fought, semifinal victory in singles play to reach the final against top-seeded Deniz Khazan of Barry.
Doubles Play
Dovnik and Kozar had little trouble getting past Embry-Riddle's Julia Mautner and Alessia Tripaldelli in the quarterfinal round, collecting an 8-2 win, before picking up a hard-fought, 8-7 triumph over Barry's Daniela Farfan and Kim Moosbacher in the semifinals.
Both Espinal and Nosievici were forced to gut it out early on Sunday, needing an 8-7 victory to slip past Barry's Jil Engelmann and Angela Leweurs in the quarters. The semis proved to be a little less stressful, as the NSU duo then upended West Alabama's Hania Franco and Katia de la Garza, 8-4, to reach the final against their teammates.
Singles Play
Following her consecutive wins in doubles, Kozar kept the momentum going into singles, once again getting the best of Moosbacher by turning in a 6-3, 5-7, 10-5 victory.
Espinal was forced to retire in the second set of her semifinal match.
