FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (February 10, 2007)- Jennifer Havens (Sr., Ontario, Ore.) registered 26 points on 9-14 shooting as well as seven rebounds and Mechelle Jones (Sr. Rockledge, Fla.) added 13 points as Nova Southeastern (9-15, 7-6 SSC) defeated Eckerd College (6-18, 1-12) by a score of 70-49 on Saturday night.
Before the game, seniors Havens, Jones and Melissa Tippets (Jacksonville, Ala.) were honored as they appeared at the University Center Arena for the final time in their careers.
With 9:33 remaining in the first half, Havens scored on a layup, making her only the second player in team history to amass 1,000 points for her career.
In the first half, NSU started the game on a 21-0 lead, capped by a made layup by Amber Bishko (Jr., Orlando, Fla.). Following Havens' historic field goal and made layups by Fabienne Bain (Jr., Quebec, Canada) and Brittany Green (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), the Sharks pushed the score to 33-4, their largest lead of the night, with 7:55 remaining in the half, helping NSU to a 43-16 halftime lead.
In the half, NSU shot 54.1 percent from the field while Eckerd shot 22 percent.
The Tritons began the second half with a 14-11 run but NSU would hold on for the 21-point victory.
In addition to Havens' and Jones' contributions, guard Tia Evenson (Jr., Neodesha, Kan) added 11 points and seven assists while Bishko added seven rebounds.
NSU will be back in action as they take on the Lynn University Fighting Knights in Boca Raton, Fla. on Wednesday, February 14 at 5:30pm in what will be a key SSC matchup as both teams jockey for position in the upcoming SSC Tournament.
