NSU Women's Basketball Falls To #20 Florida Tech 44-33

Senior Guard Mechelle Jones Scores 17 In Defeat To SSC Leading Panthers

MELBOURNE, Fla. (February 17, 2007) - #20 Florida Tech started the second half on a 15-0 run to overtake NSU 44-33 on Saturday afternoon on the road in the Clemente Center. The Sharks fall to 9-17 overall and 7-8 in SSC play while SSC leading Florida Tech improves to 21-4 and 13-2 in conference play.

After falling behind 11-2 to start play, the Sharks rallied to finish the first half on a 17-7 run to lead 19-18 at the intermission. Guard Mechelle Jones (Sr., Rockledge, Fla.) stepped up her play to score seven points in the opening half, as the Sharks were without the services of their top two scorers for the entire run. Forward Jennifer Havens (Sr., Ontario, Ore.) was sidelined with foul trouble while guard Amber Bishko (Jr., Orlando, Fla.) was sidelined due to injury.

Back to back 3-pointers by Kristin Heminger capped a 15-0 Panther run to open the second half, putting Florida Tech up 33-19. Another 3-pointer by Jennifer Tamilio gave the Panthers their largest lead of the game at 20 points with seven minutes remaining before NSU closed to within 11 points at the final horn.

NSU was held to 27.3% (12-44) shooting for the game, including just 19.0% (4-21) in the second half. Florida Tech Shot 28.6% (16-56) for the game and out-rebounded NSU 44-30 for the game.

Jones led all scorers with 17 points in the game on 6-16 shooting from the floor. Center Fabienne Bain (Jr., Longueuil, Quebec) contributed with seven rebounds and four blocks off the bench for the Sharks.

NSU will play their final game of the regular season next Saturday, February 24th at 2pm vs. the University of Tampa on the road. The game can be heard live on the NSU Athletics Audiocast Network.
