ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (February 9, 2008) - NSU center Stephanie Sarosi (So., Mims, Fla.) led all scorers with 26 points on 11-of-18 shooting to go along with nine rebounds as the Nova Southeastern Sharks (16-6, 9-2 SSC) defeated the Eckerd Tritons (14-8, 4-7 SSC) by a score of 70-56 on Saturday afternoon at Eckerd's McArthur Center. The Sharks got double figure scoring from four players and shot 13-of-15 from the free throw line.
The game began as a defensive struggle as the two teams combined for just nine points within the first five minutes of the game. With NSU leading 4-2 with 16:42 left in the first frame, a three-pointer from Javiera Novion sparked the Tritons on a 9-0 run, giving Eckerd an 11-4 lead with 12:45 left.
Sarosi, who scored 13 points in each half, subsequently scored a basket, squelching the run, allowing the Sharks to outscore the Tritons 27-17 over the remainder of the half.
NSU outshot Eckerd in the first half, 46 percent to 37 percent and committed nine turnovers to EC's 11.
After a first half that featured six lead changes and two ties, the Sharks found things much easier in the second half as they shot 55.2 percent from the field on 16-of-29 attempts and outscored Eckerd 39-28 in the frame en route to the 14-point victory.
In addition to Sarosi's 26 points, the Sharks got double figure scoring from three other players as Amber Bishko (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) poured in 10 points with seven rebounds and LaShawnna Edwards (So., North Miami Beach, Fla.) and Brittany Green (Sr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) added 12 and 10 off the bench, respectively. Edwards also grabbed seven boards and dished out six assists.
Samantha Infantino led the Tritons with 22 points, accounting for all but two of Eckerd's 24 bench points, while grabbing nine rebounds.
After a bye on Wednesday, NSU will return to action on Saturday, February 16 as they host the Saint Leo Lions at 5:30pm at the University Center Arena.
