MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Feb. 18, 2009) - The Nova Southeastern women's basketball team defeated the Barry Buccaneers 60-53 in Sunshine State Conference women's basketball action in the Health & Sports Center on Wednesday. The win improves the Sharks record to 10-14 on the season including 6-7 in SSC play. Barry falls to 14-10, 5-8 SSC.
NSU jumped out to an early lead, taking an 11-1 advantage over the Buccaneers. Barry would come back, taking a 25-24 lead into the break with a lay-up by Mariesa Greene. The Sharks held Barry to just 27.3 percent (9-33) shooting in the half while hitting on 43.5 percent (10-23) of their own shots. Greene carried the Bus with 14 points while Eliza Allen (Sr., Hegenheim, France) led NSU with 11 points.
A lay-up by Stephanie Sarosi (Jr., Mims, Fla.) put the NSU up for good with 5:23 remaining at 49-47. The Sharks outscored the Bucs 16-6 over the last seven minutes to take the game. The Bucs made just one of their last eight shots from the field.
Sarosi led all scorers with 21 points. She scored her 1,000th point of her career on a jumper with 6:49 remaining in the first half. Sarosi (1,013) joins Jessica Pate (1,692) and Jennifer Havens (1,053) as the only 1,000 point scorers in NSU women's basketball history. She added eight rebounds and six blocks in 32 minutes of action.
Allen followed with 18 points. She was 5-5 from three point range and had four assists. Stevie Kamp (Fr., Mesa, Ari.) was also in double figures with 10 points.
Greene led Barry with 19 points and nine rebounds.
The Sharks return home to host Saint Leo University on Saturday, Feb. 21st at 2 pm inside the Arena at the Don Taft University Center.
