NSU Baseball Routs St. Michael's 17-0

Nine Run First Inning Jumpstarts Sharks Offensive Attack

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Mar. 18, 2010) - The Nova Southeastern University baseball team routed St. Michael's 17-0 on Thursday evening at the NSU Baseball Complex. The win improves the Sharks record to 12-14 on the season while St. Michael's falls to 1-5.

The Sharks scored nine runs on six hits in the bottom of the first inning to put the game out of reach. Freshman starting pitcher Vinnie Contaldi (Jupiter, Fla.) took over from there, holding St. Michael's scoreless over five innings and limiting the Purple Knights to just three hits. Relievers Tyler Redding (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Anthony Gallego (Jr., Miami, Fla.) combined to hold Adelphi hitless over the final four innings.

NSU added a solo run in the third, six in the sixth and a single run in the seventh inning.

Junior catcher Haven FitzSimmonds (Loxahatchee, Fla.) led the Sharks at the plate, going 2-4 with a run scored and six RBI. He blasted a grand slam in the sixth inning to account for four of the RBI. Freshman Alex Marrero (Miami, Fla.) also homered in the game for NSU.

Junior center fielder Matt Seese (Ocala, Fla.) was 3-5 with two runs scored. Designated hitter Nikko Echevarria (So., Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia) and right fielder Brayan Valencia (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) had two hits apiece. 13 NSU batters had a hit and 14 different players scored a run for the Sharks.

NSU remains at home, hosting #20 Franklin Pierce in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 20th at the NSU Baseball Complex.
