FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Trying to maintain its three game win streak, the Nova Southeastern University women’s basketball team (9-3, 2-1 SSC) will battle cross-town rival Barry University (7-6, 0-4 SSC) in the midweek game on Wednesday, Jan. 12th at 5:30 p.m. at the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center.
The Sharks, who lost their first SSC game against Rollins (87-61) in December, has beaten their last two conference opponents to open the New Year. Last week, NSU took wins away from Florida Southern (75-69) on Jan. 5th before squeaking by Saint Leo (72-71) on Jan. 8.
The Sharks are 8-0 on the year when scoring 70+ points. NSU averages 71.8 ppg, which is good for third in the conference standings.
Nova Southeastern tallied 12 blocks in its win over Saint Leo to increase its average to 6.7 bpg, which is now good enough for first in the nation.
Senior center Stephanie Sarosi (Mims, Fla.), the reigning SSC Player of the Week, continues to lead the conference in scoring and she rakes in 17.7 points per game.
Moving up in the national rankings in assists per game is senior point guard Abbie Tepe (Cincinnati, Ohio) who dishes 5.9 for the fifth spot. As a team, the Sharks are in the top-20 with 17.5.
About Barry
The Buccaneers finished the 2009-10 season 21-10 overall and 10-6 in the SSC. Barry was picked seventh in the SSC preseason poll and currently sits eighth in conference play.
After graduating the 2009-10 SSC Player of the Year, Mariesa Green, the Buccaneers are still trying to find their niche.
Barry has failed to win a SSC game but has beaten then No. 13 Franklin Pierce, 67-49.
Yvonne Houston leads the Bucs averaging 13.3 points per game while Nadia Tijani brings down 6.3 rebounds per game.
Barry sits first in the conference with its defense holding opponents to 49.8 points per game.
The Series vs. Barry
The matchup will mark the 26th meeting between the teams. The Sharks have a slight 13-12 advantage over Barry. In the last four years, the Sharks only dropped one game to the Bucs.
Last season, the Sharks dropped their first game against Barry, 62-51 on Jan. 18th. In the second game of the matchup on Feb. 13th, NSU redeemed themselves as they downed the Bucs, 56-48.
