Women’s Basketball Opens Conference Play Against Barry Saturday

The Sharks are riding a six-game win streak.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team (6-1) wrapped up a successful November, playing to a 6-1 record, and hopes to keep the wins coming as December play begins. Conference foe Barry (2-3) visits NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center Saturday afternoon in the first Sunshine State Conference game for each squad. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
 
After dropping its opener to Valdosta State, the Sharks have ripped off six straight victories, outscoring opponents by 19.7 points. The most recent of those six victories came on the road Wednesday against Florida Memorial, 64-40. Meixandra Porter (Jr., Chantilly, Va.) and Quinessa Johnson (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) paced the Sharks with 13 points each.
 
As a team, NSU blocked a season-high seven shots with Jessica Russi (So., Lake Mary, Fla.) swatting away three Lions’ shot attempts. Jasmine Wilkins (So., Miami, Fla.), who tallied 10 points, recorded two blocks and three steals for the Sharks.
 
The Bucs enter Saturday’s matchup sporting a 2-3 record. Barry picked up its first win of the season Nov. 18, squeaking by Concordia-St. Paul in overtime, 81-79. Most recently, the Bucs topped Colorado-Mines on the road 51-48.
 
Shanna Suttington leads the Bucs in scoring, averaging 14.6 ppg. Yvonne Houston (10.8) and Danielle DeBarry (10) also average at least 10 points per contest. Alexandra Zamora is the top rebounder for the Bucs, grabbing eight boards per game.
