FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team (6-2, 0-1 SSC) looks to bounce back after a disappointing last-second loss to Barry, travelling to St. Petersburg, Fla. to take on Eckerd (5-1, 1-0 SSC) Saturday. Tip-off at the McArthur Center is slated for 2 p.m.
Led by Jessica Russi (So., Lake Mary, Fla.), who scored nine of her team-high 14 points in the second half, NSU recovered from a nine-point half time deficit to even the score against Barry late in the second half. The Sharks had three shot attempts rim out before Danielle DeBerry scored the winning layup for the Bucs.
Freshman Danielle Robinson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), NSU’s leading scorer at 14.8 points per game, will be looking to bounce back on an individual level after finishing the Barry game with a season-low five points. Robinson’s backcourt partner, Meixandra Porter (Jr., Chantilly, Va.), continues to bring a stable presence to the Sharks’ offense, averaging 13.5 ppg, while dishing out a SSC-leading 5.1 assists per contest.
Jasmine Wilkins (So., Miami, Fla.) and Quinessa Johnson (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) continue to make an impact, both scoring and attacking the glass. Wilkins contributes 10.6 ppg and snares a team-high 7.4 rebounds per game, while Johnson chips in 7.9 ppg and leads the team with 27 offensive rebounds.
The Tritons boast an exceptionally balanced offenses with six student-athletes averaging at least 7.0 ppg. Kati Rausberg sets the standard with 12.2 ppg, while leading rebounder Emilie Hesseldal (7.0 rpg) adds 9.3 ppg.
Eckerd picked up a win in its first conference game at Florida Tech Dec. 3. Rausberg tallied 20 points as the Tritons notched a 73-62 win. The Tritons then followed with an 86-41 drumming of Northwood Wednesday. Six players reached double-figures for Eckerd.
The Sharks hold a 15-9 advantage in the all-time series against the Tritons. NSU won 11 consectutive games against Eckerd, beginning with a home victory Jan. 27, 2004, stretching to a two-point victory March 5, 2008. Last season, the Tritons took a pair of games from the Sharks, including a 69-67 victory at NSU, in which they battled back from 17 points down.
