BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Charla Nelson-James dropped in a layup with 21 seconds left on the clock to give the Lynn Fighting Knights (9-7, 4-2 SSC) a 58-56 victory over the Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team (10-5, 3-3 SSC) Wednesday night at the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center.
The Sharks got off to a slow start on the offensive end of the floor, allowing Lynn to build an early 7-1 lead before
Jasmine Wilkins (So., Miami, Fla.) scored NSU’s first field goal almost five minutes into the action. The Sharks continued to battle and took their first lead of the opening half, 16-15, at the 7:58 mark on a
Danielle Robinson (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) 3-pointer.
The Fighting Knights responded with a 10-2 run over the final four minutes of the half to head into the intermission with a 30-23 advantage. Robinson led all scorers with 10 points, burying NSU’s only two treys of the half. Lynn’s scoring was more balanced, as seven players tallied at least two points.
The offense came alive in the early stages of the second half for the Sharks, as NSU stormed out on a 13-2 run, capped by a
Meixandra Porter (Jr., Chantilly, Va.) steal and layup. The game remained within four points for the final 10 minutes of play with each team answering when the other scored.
With the Sharks down four with 4:19 left to play,
Jada Buckner (Loudon, Tenn.) and Robinson sandwiched 3-pointers around a Lynn layup to even the score at 54-54. Marquis Lee put the Fighting Knights back on top with a fast break layup, but Wilkins quickly responded with a scooping lay in of her own.
Nelson-James gave Lynn the decisive bucket with 21 seconds after grabbing an offensive rebound and laying the ball in. Porter had one last chance to tie the game, but her runner in the lane would not fall for NSU.
Robinson led all scorers with 18 points, draining four triples and grabbing five boards. Wilkins came up just two rebounds short of a double-double with 16 points and eight boards. Lee paced the Fighting Knights with 15 points on a 5-of-10 night from the field.
The Sharks will look to rebound Saturday when Saint Leo visits Fort Lauderdale, Fla. for a 2 p.m. matchup.
