FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team (11-7, 4-5 SSC) opens the month of February with a home game against the Eckerd Tritons (11-6, 5-4 SSC) Wednesday. Tip-off at the NSU Arena in the Don Taft University Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
The NSU offense had its worst outing of the season over the weekend at Barry. Scoring a season-low 42 points, the Sharks managed only a single point over the final 8:30 of the game against the Bucs. Struggles from long range attributed to the loss, as the Sharks had hit 29 3-pointers in the three prior games, but converted on only 4-of-19 attempts from deep Saturday.
The Sharks will look to get their conference record back to .500 against the Tritons and stay in the hunt for a top-4 spot heading into the SSC Tournament at the end of the season. Eckerd and Lynn both hold 5-4 conference marks, just ahead of the Sharks, going into Wednesday’s action.
The Tritons and Sharks met earlier this season on Dec. 10 in St. Petersburg, Fla. Eckerd used 14 points from Linsey Niles to knock off NSU, 71-55.
Jada Buckner (Sr., Loudon, Tenn.) scored a season-high 15 points against the Tritons of 6-of-8 shooting.
The Eckerd student-athletes have 10 extra minutes on their legs, as their past two games have went into overtime. Lynn took down the visiting Tritons in the extra session, 54-49, Jan. 25. Eckerd rebounded with a 72-70 victory at home over Florida Tech Jan. 28.
Danielle Robinson (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and
Meixandra Porter (Jr., Chantilly, Va.), two of the best scorers in the conference at 14.6 and 13.9 points per game, respectively, will need to have good performances to combat Eckerd’s top three scorers who each average over 11 ppg. Emilie Hesseldal paces the Tritons with a 12.1 average in 10 games this season, followed by Taylor Young (11.8) and Kati Rausberg (11.4).
