Ian Facey Paces Men’s Golf to a Win at Guy Harvey Invite

Ian Facey of Miami, Fla. wins first individual collegiate title.

FINAL RESULTS

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. –
Eight years in the making and it finally happened. The Nova Southeastern University men’s golf team took home the team title at the 8th-Annual Guy Harvey Invitational for the first time since becoming the tournament host in 2005. The Sharks fired a three-round 848 (-16) on the 6,868-yard, par 72 PGA National Champions course on Tuesday afternoon.

Not only did the Sharks win the team title, Shark youngster and Miami, Fla. native Ian Facey won his first-ever individual collegiate title to help pace NSU along the way. A sophomore on the defending national champion Sharks team, Facey fired three consecutive rounds under par (66-70-71) to finish at nine under for the tournament. His three-round 207 beat the field of 74 by three strokes.

“Ian played great this week,” head coach Ryan Jamison said. “He did a really great job of staying in the moment and hitting some great shots. It was a great comeback from the last tournament and he really stepped it up this week.”

As a team, NSU had come just a few strokes short of winning the tournament each of the past two seasons. This year was a different story. From the beginning, NSU opened with the tournament’s lowest round of 279 on Monday and led by nine strokes. They maintained the same momentum the remaining two rounds shooting 283 and 287 and was the only team to shoot under par in each of the three rounds. The Sharks finished at 16 under to beat their nearest competitor Barry by 10 strokes.

“I was very proud of the team this week,” Jamison said. “It feels good to get our first win in the Guy Harvey Invitational being so close to home. We thank everyone at Guy Harvey, Inc. for their support and hope to continue this great partnership for years to come.”

Jamison added, “I was very happy to have three of our guys finish in the top five. We had a great week of practice and this is just an example of all the hard work they put in. We now have to turn our focus toward continuing to improve, because this week was just one step toward our end goal in May.”

Finishing 10 strokes behind NSU, No. 2 Barry was the only other team to finish under par. After a two-over par opening round 290, the Buccaneers fired back-to-back under par rounds of 285 and 284 to finish at six under in second place. Lynn (+8) finished third overall with a three-round 872 and Eckerd (+17) finished fourth at 881. Third-ranked Florida Southern (+20) and Rollins (+20) finished tied for fifth to round out the top five teams.

Behind Facey’s individual medalist honor, NSU’s Benjamin Taylor (Jr., Leatherhead, England) and Oscar Lengdèn (So., Helsingborg, Sweden) both shot six under par scores of 210 to finished in a three-way tie for second with Barry’s Marcus Sergstrom. Mitch Farrer (Jr., West Sussex, England) tied for 28th with a three-round 223 (+7), while Hunter O'Mahony (Fr., Tequesta, Fla.) tied for 32nd with a 224 (+8) three-round score to round out NSU’s team scores.

The next time on the links for the Sharks will be in Monterey Bay, Calif. to participate in the CSU-Monterey Bay Otter Invitational on Oct. 22. The tournament will be hosted at the Blackhorse Golf Course.
