BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women’s basketball (11-8, 4-6 SSC) dropped their third consecutive conference game by way of the Tritons from Eckerd College (12-6, 6-4 SSC) Wednesday night, 50-48, during their annual “think pink” breast cancer awareness game.
Battling the whole game despite a slow start,
Meixandra Porter (Jr., Chantilly, Va.) led the Sharks from the field, lacing 13 points, while three teammates:
Jasmine Wilkins (So., Miami, Fla.),
Jessica Russi (So., Lake Mary, Fla.) and
Richelle Carach (So., Naples, Fla.) tallied seven boards a piece.
The Tritons came out on fire, outscoring the Sharks 16-1 through the first eight minutes of the first half. After NSU’s first point at the 17:37 mark, it went 0-8 shooting from the field. The Sharks found some momentum from a Carach layup plus-one opportunity, which catapulted a 9-0 run to put them within six of Eckerd through the halfway point of the half.
The remainder of the first half proved to be an equal battle, as the Sharks netted 13 to the Tritons 14 with a halftime score of 23-30 in favor of Eckerd.
The Sharks came out in the second continuing with their first half shooting struggles, getting outscored 14-4 in the first seven minutes of the second half. Following a NSU timeout, Carach and teammate
Rheisa Burke (So., Port Charlotte, Fla.) pumped life back into the Sharks, assisting in a 7-0 run, putting them within eight points of the Tritons.
Following a
Jada Buckner (Sr., Loudon, Tenn.) free throw that cut the Triton lead to nine, it became the Porter show. The junior scored nine of the Sharks remaining eleven points to put them within two points 50-48 with only 33 seconds remaining in the contest.
After a missed layup by Eckerd, Porter had one last shot to even the score at the buzzer, but she could not get the ball to fall through the net, as the Tritons escaped with the victory.
The Sharks return to conference play Saturday, Feb. 4, at 5:30 p.m. in Lakeland, Fla. taking on the Florida Southern Mocs.
