GAME ONE BOX | GAME TWO BOX
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (10-2) won back-to-back games Saturday at the NSU Baseball Complex, taking both games in a doubleheader against the Saint Rose Golden Knights (0-2), 12-6 and 13-1.
Carlos Asuaje (So., Weston, Fla.) had a great day, going 5-for-9 with three runs and three RBI over two games. He brought his season batting average to .415 over 41 at bats.
Eric Acevedo (Jr., Miami, Fla.) posted team-highs with five runs scored and four RBI, all of which came on a grand slam in game one. It was his first home run of the season.
Vinnie Contaldi (Jr., Jupiter, Fla.) (3-1) and
Zachary Westcott (So., Weston, Fla.) (3-0) each picked up wins to add to their team-high total.
GAME ONE
The Sharks got off to a rocky start but eventually found their groove against the Golden Knights, winning 12-6.
Cody Stiles (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.) started the game but only went three innings. He held the Golden Knights to one hit in his time on the mound and struck out four batters. However, NSU committed four errors in the first three innings and Stiles left the mound with his team trailing, 4-3. Contaldi stepped in and pitched two shutout innings, only giving up one hit.
The Sharks found their rhythm offensively during Contaldi’s two innings, scoring two runs in the fourth frame and six runs in the fifth.
Mitchell Buerosse (Jr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) made his second appearance of his NSU tenure in relief, pitching three innings before
Ralph Pena (Jr., Miami, Fla.) pitched a shutout ninth inning.
NSU would tally three home runs in the game, two of which came from players who did not have one entering the day.
Brett Clements (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) brought in three runs in the second inning on a homer past right centerfield.
Ray Navarro (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and
Alex Marrero (Jr., Miami, Fla.) both scored on the play.
Acevedo would hit his first home run of the season, a grand slam, in the fifth inning. It was the second grand slam hit at the NSU Baseball Complex this season.
Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) followed up in the fifth inning with a solo home run to left field. It was Regoli’s seventh home run of the season. After just 12 games played, Regoli is just 10 homers away from the NSU single season record.
Clements would finish the game with two runs and three RBI while Acevedo would score three times. Navarro and Marrero each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Scott Woodrey (Sr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.), who sat out the last five games, returned to go 2-for-4 with a run and a RBI.
Daniel Petitbon (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) finished his day after game one and went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
GAME TWO
The Sharks continued to pour on runs in the doubleheader finale as they took out the Golden Knights in a seven-inning contest, 13-1.
Westcott had arguably the strongest outing of his career as he earned his team-high third win. Over six innings, Westcott struck out a career-high seven batters and limited the Golden Knights to one run.
Tyler Redding (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) made his second appearance of the season and pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
The Sharks put the win in the bag early as they scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings. With a five-run cushion heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Sharks put forth their most explosive offensive performance. They scored a season-best seven runs in the frame on 12 plate appearances.
Asuaje had his best game of the season, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three doubles, three runs scored and three RBI. He also recorded his team-best fifth stolen base of the year. After sitting game one out,
Chris Morales (Jr., Miami, Fla.) had a strong outing, hitting 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles and three RBI. The duo, who batted in the one and two hole, respectively, accounted for seven of the team’s 12 hits and six of the team’s nine RBI.
Regoli drove in his team-best 16th RBI in the game while batting 1-for-3. Scott Woodrey also drove a run home while
Kevin Reynolds (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) recorded an RBI on a double down the left-field line.
Ryan Woodrey (Fr., Lighthouse Point) and
Nikko Echevarria (Sr., Abqaib, Saudi Arabia) brought up the rear of the lineup and combined to score four runs.
The Sharks will return to action this Tuesday against another Northeast-10 opponent in Southern New Hampshire at the NSU Baseball Complex at 6 p.m.
