Swimming and Diving Completes Competition At All-Florida Invitational

Sharks display their potential, besting tough NCAA Division I opponents.

RESULTS

GAINESVILLE, Fla.
– The men’s and women’s Nova Southeastern swimming and diving teams concluded their first event of the 2011-12 season, competing in the All-Florida Invitational against Division I and Division II opponents.

The men’s team finished fourth overall with 507 points and the women’s team finished seventh with 141 points. Host Florida won both the men’s and women’s tournaments with 1,273 points and 1,141.5 points, respectively.

"I am very pleased with our performances this weekend. Over the course of a three day meet, similar to SSC's and NCAA's, we showed that we can continue to get better and perform at a high level against some of the best teams in the in the country.” said head coach Hollie-Bonwit Cron. “With that being said, we will continue to work hard in the pool and make some changes to continue this progress. I look forward to seeing our growth this season."

On the final day of the three, the men’s team started its day with the 1650-yard freestyle. Four Sharks finished within the top-20, placing ahead of swimmers from Florida State, Florida Atlantic, and Florida. Oskar Nordstrand (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden) paced the pack of Sharks, finishing 11th with a time of16:12.51, while Addison Cates (So., Port Charlotte, Fla.) was 13th with a time of 16:25.92. Cameron Chambers (Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla.) was 16th with a time of (16:48.17) and Chris Norris (Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.) rounded out the pack with a time of (16:51.48).

Josh Davis (Jr., Huron, S.D.) led the trio of Sharks in the B-final of the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:53.91. Michael Zislin (Jr., Fort Myers, Fla.) (2:00.90) and Darren Rubenchik (Jr., Ontario, Canada) (2:02.71) finished 13th and 14th, respectively.

In the 100-yard freestyle, Kristen Ann Zielinski (Fr., Chesapeake,Va) was the lone qualifier in the B-final. She claimed 16th place with a time of 54.18. Esau Simpson (Jr. St. David's, Grenada) touched at 47.17, less than a second off of a NCAA B-qualifying time (46.96). Nordstrand and Santiago Pombo (Jr., Bogota, Columbia) finished shortly after Simpson and less than a second of one another at 48.45 and 48.48 for 13th and 14th, respectively.

Ashley Bransford (So., Santa Cruz, Aruba) swam the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing 15th with a time of 2:26.28.

On the men’s side, Oscar Aldabe (Jr., Alicante, Spain) was the top Shark in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:10.72 for eighth place. Thomas Aycart (Jr., Miami, Fla.) finished behind Aldabe with a time of 2:13.02 for ninth place. Cameron Pfahler (Jr., Neptune Beach ,Fla.) (2:13.81) and Cameron Chambers (Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla.) 2:14.41also finished in the top-15 for the Sharks, placing 10th and 12th, respectively.

The Sharks swim again Oct. 20, in a Sunshine State Conference meet against Saint Leo at the NSU Aquatic Center.
