LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 1 Nova Southeastern women’s golf team dominated the field at the 16th Annual Lady Moc Classic in their first tournament of the championship season, shooting a +16 (290-300-290–880), finishing 18 strokes ahead of Lynn and capturing the top two spots on the leaderboard. This win marks the third NSU victory in four years at the Classic.
Despite the poor weather, nothing could stop the Sharks from winning the classic with the best score in tournament history, nor did it prevent a one-hole playoff between two of their own No. 4
Linnea Johansson (Fr., Vaxjo, Sweden) and No. 7
Liliana Cammisa (So., Alta Gracia, Argentina), who each tied the individual tournament scoring record.
Johansson, who shot a +2 (70-74-74–218) and teammate Cammisa, who shot the same score (74-73-71–218), went head-to-head in a playoff to determine medalist honors. Johansson came out on top after a birdie putt on the par-4 No. 18 to win her first collegiate individual title.
This turn of events marked the second time in the tournament’s 15-year history that a playoff was needed to determine the individual champion. The first time was in 2011, when NSU’s Taylor Collins defeated another teammate in Sandra Changkija. Johansson and Cammisa tied the tournament scoring record of two-over par 218, with Collins and Changkija.
Two other NSU golfers excelled in their play, both finishing in the top 10. The Sharks' No. 3,
Abbey Gittings (Sr., Tamworth, England), shot a +6 (70-76-76–222), which landed her in sixth on the leaderboard.
Daniela Ortiz (So., Morelia, Mexico) finished tied for 10th with Felicia Leftinger from Florida Tech, shooting a +9 (76-80-69–225).
Gittings, the 2012 Division II Player of the Year, played nearly as well as Johansson and Cammisa in the tournament, with only one double-bogey in her three rounds of play.
Rachel Lewis (Jr., Cardiff, Wales) rounded out the scoring for NSU, shooting her best round in Tuesday's final with a +4 (76). Lewis, who progressed each round, finished at +17 (80-77-76–233), which slotted her tied for 27th on the board.
The women are back at it again March 4th in Winter Park, Fla., at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational hosted by Rollins College.
