MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team fell in their regular season finale Saturday night to Barry, 70-65.
Despite the loss, the Sharks (19-7, 11-5 SSC) are co-champions of the Sunshine State Conference and will still be the No. 1 seed in next week’s SSC Championships. In the quarterfinal round this Thursday, March 7, NSU will face the winner of either this Barry squad or Florida Southern.
Saturday was a back-and-forth affair that saw five ties and five lead changes. The final lead change came at the 2:56 mark, when Colette Eule’s 3-pointer put Barry ahead to stay, 64-62. Another Buccaneers basket gave them a four-point lead with 1:10 remaining.
As she did last game out, Feb. 27 against Florida Tech,
Meixandra Porter (Sr., Chantilly, Va.) buried a long 3-pointer to pull NSU within one, at 66-65, with 1:02 left. Unlike the comeback win over FIT, the Sharks couldn’t overcome the deficit, as Barry made all four of their free throws for the final margin.
Tailor Jones (Sr., Altamonte Springs, Fla.) led the Sharks in both points and rebounds, with 13 and nine, respectively. Porter had 10 points, while
Taylor Buie (Fr., Puyallup, Wash.) and
Danielle Robinson (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) chipped in with nine apiece. Dominique Dixon led Barry with 17 points, and Tyler Hardy contributed a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for NSU. Barry (14-12, 5-11 SSC) will face Florida Southern as the No. 8 seed on Wednesday night in the opening round of the SSC Championships, with a 5:30 tipoff.
