KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s team advanced to the semifinal round of the Sunshine State Conference Championships by defeating Barry at the Silver Spurs Arena Thursday afternoon, 83-67.
The Sharks (20-7) broke open a tie game midway through the first half with a 13-2 run to take a 31-20 advantage at the 7:18 mark. They led at the half, 39-31, with
Meixandra Porter (Sr., Chantilly, Va.) finishing out the first-half scoring by converting an old-fashioned 3-point play to with 15 seconds left.
After the break, Barry cut the lead to six points on three occasions, the last with 8:45 left (58-52). On the ensuing possession, a
Danielle Robinson (So., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) 3-pointer kicked off eight straight Sharks points, in what would eventually become a 12-2 run and a 16-point NSU lead with 6:17 lead. The spread stayed at a minimum of 12 points the rest of the way, and 16 would end up being the final margin of victory.
"We came out strong today," said head coach LeAnn Freeland. "Our players did a great job making defensive adjustments throughout the game to keep them off-balance offensively. It was a hard-fought game and everyone played to win."
Porter led the Sharks with a game-high 25 points, leading four Shark double-digit scorers. Robinson had 16,
Amanda Burakoski (Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) 15 and
Tailor Jones (Sr., Altamonte Springs, Fla.) 10, along with seven rebounds and six assists.
Taylor Buie (Fr., Puyallup, Wash.) added eight points. She combined with the four in double digits for the Sharks' 12 total three-pointers on the afternoon (three by Porter and Burakoski and two each for Robinson, Jones and Buie).
Jessica Russi (Jr., Lake Mary, Fla.) had a great floor game with six points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Colette Eule paced Barry with 21 points. The Bucs end their season at 15-13.
The 20th win of the year marks only the second time in program history the Shark women have reached that mark. The other was the 2007-08 squad, who finished 24-7, and as SSC regular season and postseason champions.
NSU will next face No. 4 seed Rollins this Saturday, March 9, at 12 p.m. The Tars defeated Florida Tech in Thursday’s first quarterfinal matchup, 79-53.
