Track and Field Starts Off Season At USF Invitational

Sharks start off the season strong in Tampa.

TAMPA, Fla.
– The Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s track and field teams completed their first meet of the 2013 season Friday at University of South Florida Invitational, with seven individuals and two relay teams picking up top-three finishes.

NSU had two wins in the meet. In the women’s 400-meter dash, Jessica Osteen (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) took a first-place finish for the Sharks with a time of 56.60. The Sharks also went one-two in the javelin, with Ian Towne (Jr., South Walton, Minn.) and Darren Hendricks (Fr., North Port, Fla.) throwing distances of 40.77 and 39.37 meters, respectively

The first event of the day was the men’s hammer throw, and Hendricks came in fifth place with a throw of 37.13 meters. For the women, Jessica Nyiro (Fr., Davie, Fla.) finished in ninth place with a distance of 23.74 meters.

Ryan Jerothe (So. New Port Richey, Fla.) had another top-10 finish for the men in the javelin, coming in eighth (32.16 meters). For the women, Nyiro came in fifth with a throw of 22.63 meters, and Angela Leonard (Fr., Upper Chichester, Pa.) followed behind in seventh with a throw of 22.38 meters.

In the discus throw, Ben Futerman (Sr., Freehold, N.J.) and Hendricks took fifth and sixth place with throws of 38.22 and 37.50, respectively. In the women’s discus, Nyrio came in seventh with a throw of 31.74 meters. In the men’s shot put, Futerman and Hendricks placed fourth and seventh with throws of 12.28 and 10.28, respectively.  In the women’s shot put, Nyiro came in ninth at 9.84 meters.

In the women’s long jump, MaJose Foster (Fr., Lauderhill, Fla.) leapt 4.95 meters, finishing eighth. In the triple jump, Angela Kuhar (So., Erie, Pa.) and Vanessa Munley (So., Moosic, Pa.) came in third and fourth, respectively, with jumps of 10.92 and 10.62 meters. In the men’s triple jump, Derrick Wood  (Jr., Royal Palm, Fla.) was third, jumping 13.50 meters, while Aj Franklin (Fr., Pensacola, Fla.) followed behind in seventh, jumping 12.23 meters. In the men’s high jump, Wood took fourth place jumping 1.90 meters.

In the 2,000-meter steeplechase, Nico Crecco (Sr., Meridon, N.Y.) took second with a time of 6:27.23. He was the only Shark to compete in this event.

In the 1,500-meter run Rose Howell  (So., St. Louis, Mo.) was fourth with a time of 5:00.75. Teammate Brittaney Smash (So., Arlington, Texas) followed behind her in eighth with a time of 5:06.14. In the men’s event, Long Tran (Jr., Saigon, Vietnam) and Nicholas Hogan (So., Peoria, Ariz.) came in eighth and ninth with times of 4:14.52 and 4:14.74.

In the men’s 110-meter hurdles, Patrico Morency (So., Naples, Fla.) came in seventh with a time of 15.72.

Quannisha Allen (Fr., St. Augstine, Fla.) followed behind Osteen in the 400 meters, in fourth place with a time of 59.10. On the men’s side, Robert Moise (Sr., Plantantion, Fla.) and Cameron Hemenez (So., Orlando, Fla.) came in fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 50.22 and 50.24.

The women were successful in the 800-meter run where Smash, Howell and Aimee Sims (Fr., St. Anne, Ill.) placed ninth, 10th and 11th respectively, with times of 2:28.61, 2:28.74 and 2:29.21.

In the women’s 200-meter dash, Johniqua Stafford (Sr., Fort Worth, Texas) was the top Shark, placing fourth with a time of 24.57. Ciona Williams (Fr., Stockton, Ca.) and Nicole Poole (Fr., Almonte Springs, Fla.) placed sixth and 10th respectively, with times of 24.97 and 25.82.

In the 3,000-meter run, Alexandria Palm (Jr,, Winnebago, Ill.) finished in 10:57.93 to rank eighth. Timo Kilp (Jr., Kose, Estonia) was the top finisher on the men’s side taking third place with a time of 8:46.39.

And in the final event of the day, the women’s 4x400 relay team of Osteen, Stafford, Williams and Monica Sapp (Fr., Miami, Fla.) placed second with a time of 3:53.44. The men’s team of Moise, Talyn Washington (So., Royal Palm, Fla.), Hemenez and Morency also came in second with a time of 3:18.71.

The Sharks will return back to the track when they travel to Florida International on March 14. It will be an all-day event.
