BOCA RATON, Fla. – The No. 4 Nova Southeastern women's basketball team started the second half on a 26-6 run and topped Sunshine State Conference rival Lynn on the road Wednesday night, 84-53.
The Sharks (11-0, 3-0 SSC) led by six at the half, and a Lynn layup cut it to four at the 19:30 mark. From then until 10:54 left, NSU scored 26 of the game's 32 points to extend their lead to 61-35. Included in the run was 11 points from
Taylor Buie (So., Puyallup, Wash.), who only had two points in the first half and was, at that point, 0-for-6 from the 3-point line. She had three 3's in less than three minutes during the stretch.
Carrying the scoring load in the first half for NSU were seniors
Jasmine Wilkins (Miami) and
Amanda Burakoski (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Wilkins was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field for 11 first-half points, while Burakoski had nine on 3-of-4 shooting from behind the arc.
Buie would end up with 16 points in the second half, for a game-high total of 18. Burakoski had 17, including 5-of-7 from long range, while Wilkins had a double-double: 14 points (on 6-of-6 shooting) and 10 rebounds. She helped lead the Sharks to a 40-24 rebounding advantage over the Fighting Knights (8-4, 1-1 SSC).
After the three double-digit scorers, these Sharks filled the stat sheets:
Richelle Carach (Sr., Naples, Fla.) with eight points, five rebounds and two assists;
Jessica Russi (Sr., Lake Mary, Fla.) with seven points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals; and
Danielle Robinson (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) with seven points and six rebounds.
All told, the second half saw NSU outscore Lynn, 49-24. The Sharks were 14-of-20 from the field for 70 percent, and even better from 3-point land, 8-of-11 (72.7 percent). Besides Buie's three and Burakoski's two 3's in the second half, a trio of Sharks went 1-for-1:
Molly Blomer (So., West Chester, Ohio),
Alexis Murphy (So., Carlisle, Ohio) and
Julia Salmio (Sr., Vantaa, Finland).
The Shark defense held Lynn to 26 percent second-half shooting (8-of-31), including going 0-of-9 on 3-pointers. Lynn's leading scorer coming in, Zachara Bailey, finished with six points on 3-of-15 shooting. The top point-getter for the Fighting Knights on Wednesday was Nina Guillaume off the bench with 13 points.
NSU's next matchup, their third straight on the road, will be against an out-of-conference foe in Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff from West Palm Beach, Fla., will be at 2 p.m.
