FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 6 Nova Southeastern women's basketball team fell to Tampa on Saturday at the NSU Arena as the Spartans swept the season series with a 67-50 victory.
The Sharks (21-3, 11-3 SSC) held a 34-33 halftime lead but started out the second 1-for-10 from the field and were outscored 16-5 by Tampa (20-5, 13-2 SSC) during that stretch. The Spartans went up 49-39 at that point (12:18 to go), and led by at least nine the rest of the way.
That followed a first half that saw nine lead changes and the Sharks shooting 48 percent from the field and 6-of-13 from behind the arc. Conversely, after the break, the home team shot just 21.4 percent (6-of-28) overall and missed all nine of their 3-pointers.
The Sharks had four players in double digits, scoring all but two of their season-low 50 points.
Jasmine Wilkins (R-Jr., Miami) led the way with 15 and added seven rebounds.
Danielle Robinson (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) added 12 points,
Richelle Carach (Sr., Naples, Fla.) was just shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, and
Jessica Russi (Sr., Lake Mary, Fla.) notched all 10 of her points in the first half.
Tampa held NSU's leading scorer coming in,
Taylor Buie (So., Puyallup, Wash.), scoreless on 0-of-6 shooting. The Spartans were paced by Juliana Cavallaro with a game-high 21 points. Ellen Nurmi and Illyssa Vivo each chipped in with 10, while Shamika Williams had nine points and 10 rebounds.
Next up for the Sharks is Florida Tech, coming into town for Senior Night this Wednesday, Feb. 26. Ceremonies for the Sharks' four seniors –
Amanda Burakoski (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.), Carach, Russi and
Julia Salmio (Sr., Vantaa, Finland) – will take place prior to the 5:30 tipoff.
