FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 4 Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team kicks off their Sunshine State Conference ledger on Wednesday, with Lynn making the short drive south to face the Sharks at 5:30 at the NSU Arena.
The Sharks (2-0) had opposite outcomes in their NSU Tipoff Classic this past weekend, leading wire-to-wire in a 41-point win Friday over North Alabama, then outscoring Lee by 13 (20-7) to end their Saturday tilt and win by that margin.
Monaye Merritt (R-Sr., Philadelphia) and
Taylor Buie (R-Jr., Puyallup, Wash.) have been the top scoring threats thus far at 18.5 and 18.0 points per game, respectively, with Merritt leading the efforts on the other end as well, securing the first ever SSC Defensive Player of the Week award on Monday.
Lynn (0-2), while still searching for their first win, have only fallen by an average of eight points, 69-64 to Armstrong and 83-72 to Clayton State. Tifani Kerrison leads the way in both points (15.5) and rebounding (6.5), just ahead of Zachara Bailey (14.0) in the former category, and Charla Nelson-James (6.0) in the latter. Nelson-James also averages 11 points per game.
The Sharks took both contests against the Fighting Knights a year ago, 78-74 in Boca Raton, and 82-59 on their NSU Arena home floor. Departed senior
Jasmine Wilkins had double-doubles in both games to lead the victors; scoring in double digits among the returnees were Merritt and
Kayla Wright (Jr., Lauderhill, Fla.) in game one with 14 and 12, and
Alexis Murphy (Sr., Carlisle, Ohio) and
Molly Blomer (Sr., West Chester, Ohio ) in game two with 15 and 10.
The sweep last year means seven in a row in the series for the Sharks, the longest winning streak for the team against any SSC opponent. All-time, it's 17-14 in favor of NSU, with the last Lynn win coming on Jan. 18, 2012, 58-56.
Tune in Wednesday night just prior to gametime for coverage of the women's SSC opener.
