FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The highly-ranked Nova Southeastern University men's and women's golf teams each head north to have their first drives of the spring season in the upcoming two days, beginning with the women on Sunday at 8 a.m.
The No. 1 men's golfers head to the Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, Florida, to take part in Florida Southern's annual Matlock Collegiate Classic. A little further up the road, in St. Petersburg, the No.2 women will play on the Slammer & Squire Course at the World Golf Invitational, hosted by Flagler.
The women tee off first, on Sunday morning for 18 holes, and then another 18 to wrap it up Monday. The men's event begins Monday with 36 holes on the first day and an 18-hole second round the following day.
The stacked field of 17 women's squads has nine ranked squads, and in addition to the No. 2 Sharks, there are three more top-five DII teams competing: No. 1 Florida Tech, the hosts Flagler at No. 3, and No. 4 Lynn. Last year, the course played as a par-72 at 6,010 yards.
The Matlock Classic will be played at the par-72, 7,065-yard Lone Palm GC for the eighth straight year, and it will be the 34th consecutive year the event has been held overall. There are four more top-10 teams of the 15 squads taking part: No. 2 Barry, No. 3 USC-Aiken, No. 6 Lynn and No. 7 Columbus State.
