FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women's basketball team will hit the road for the first time in the 2016-17 season this Saturday, traveling to Tampa, Fla. to take on Sunshine State Conference foe Tampa University.
The two teams resume a rivalry that has seen the Sharks (2-1) go 9-5 against the Spartans (1-1) the last five years. Both squads grabbed regular season wins in their home gyms last season before meeting again in the Sunshine State Conference semifinals, where the Spartans ended up on top, 73-63.
The Sharks picked up their first SSC win this past Wednesday in the NSU Arena, a 94-56 rout of Palm Beach Atlantic.
Samantha Logan recorded her second double-double in as many games, with 14 rebounds and shared the team-high 16 points with
Taylor Buie, who made all four of her attempts from beyond the arc. Buie also added five assists and picked up five steals. In just her third career start,
Katie Barnard added 10 points while
Maria Bardeeva and
Megan Piggott added 11 and 10 points, respectively, off the bench. Barnard also matched her career-high of eight rebounds.
Logan is the Shark team leader in points at 13.0 and leads both NSU and the conference in rebounds, pulling down on average 10.3 a game.
Christen Prasse is next in scoring at 12.3 and has already tallied 17 assists in three games, putting her in the top of the league, averaging 5.7 a game.
After losing six letterwinners, the University of Tampa returns two starters to its roster, Elena de Alfredo and Karma Jeremie. de Alfredo was one of two players that started all 33 games last season. Newcomer Faith Sanders and de Alfredo are currently leading the Spartan offense, averaging 14.0 and 13.5 ppg, respectively. Jeremie has a team-high average of 8.5 rebounds per game.
