Sharks Baseball Completes Sweep Of Saint Leo

NSU’s pitching allows two run total on Friday night.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (18-11, 8-4 SSC) completed the sweep of the Saint Leo Lions (18-13, 3-6 SSC) on Friday night, winning game one by a score of 10-1 and game two by a score of 6-1. Matt Hardy earned his fifth win in the first game, while Julian Loret de Mola garnered his second win.

Game 1 – NSU 10, SLU 1

NSU came out ready to play in game one of the doubleheader, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning. It began with Brandon Gomez's base hit to left center, scoring Jancarlos Cintron and Sebastian Diaz. Following Gomez's single was a Visbal groundout that scored Daniel Zardon to make the score 3-0. The Sharks would add another run after Dylan Woods reached on a throwing error by the Saint Leo second baseman that simultaneously scored Gomez on the overthrow. NSU capped the six-run inning with a two-run home run off of the bat of freshman catcher Jake Anchia.

Saint Leo managed to score one run in the fourth inning, but that was all that Matt Hardy allowed on the day, as the junior tossed 5.2 innings with six strikeouts. Hardy was relieved by Cameron Churchill, Alexander Kline, and Steven Fleming who all kept the Lions scoreless.

The Sharks would extend their lead to six in the fifth, when Zardon launched his eighth homerun of the year over the left field fence. NSU would add three more runs in the seventh, as Dallas Perez, Cintron, and Sebastian Diaz all scored to make the score 10-1, which would prove to be the final in game one.

Game 2 – NSU 6, SLU 1

In game two, the Sharks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first, all in thanks to a Visbal sacrifice-fly, scoring Cintron, and a two RBI-triple off of the bat of Kevin Suarez. The Sharks would add another run in the third, following a Kavan Thompson single to centerfield that advanced Visbal to third. Visbal would score on the play, as Saint Leo's centerfielder threw the ball away on an attempt to get Visbal out at third.

Saint Leo would score one in the fifth inning and just like the first game, that was all for the Lions as the combination of Loret de Mola, Devin Pellien, Joe DiBenedetto, and Devin Raftery kept the Saint Leo bats quiet for the remainder of the night.

NSU capped their night with an opposite field home run off of the bat of Visbal and a RBI-single from Gomez to make the score 6-1 and give the Sharks enough to complete the sweep of the Lions for the third year in the row.
