FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team welcomes three teams to the Rick Case Arena this Friday and Saturday to compete in its annual Thanksgiving Classic. The Sharks will take on West Alabama at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24 before facing off against Lee on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 2:00 p.m.
The Sharks have kicked off the 2017-18 season with a 3-1 record, and are currently ranked fifth in the South Region. NSU began SSC play with back-to-back wins, 70-66 over Lynn and 72-66 over Tampa. In her first conference action since March, 2016,
Kayla Wright averaged 19.5 points on her way to earning SSC Player of the Week honors. Wright currently leads the league in field goal percentage (0.696) and ranks second in points per game (19.3 ppg).
Cheray Saunders joins Wright in double-digit scoring, averaging 11.0 ppg while also adding 4.8 rebounds per game. She also leads the squad in total assists with 13. With her 66.7 percent field goal percentage from outside the arc,
Alison Hughes currently leads not only the Sharks, but the league as a whole.
West Alabama currently holds a 2-2 record with two of their losses coming from SSC members Eckerd and Embry-Riddle. Their lone double-digit scorer is Tazsa Garrett-Hammett, who averages 12.0 ppg and 7.0 rpg.
Lee remains perfect on the year with a 4-0 overall record, grabbing their first two wins of the season over Saint Leo and Florida Southern. Their leading scorers are Carrie Cheeks and Erin Walsh, who average 13.8 and 11.5 ppg, respectively. Defensively, Cheeks also pulls down 9.0 boards on average.
