FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Following a perfect 4-0 start on the opening weekend of the season, No. 1 Nova Southeastern will look to cap its five-game home stand with another tally in the win column when it welcomes St. Thomas (Fla.) to the NSU Baseball Complex Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET.
The Sharks' offense picked up right where it left off from a year ago, blasting 10 home runs through the first four contests while averaging a healthy 8.5 runs per game. Six players in the lineup batted at least .350 in victories over Tusculum, Alabama-Huntsville and Barry. In addition, three players registered five or more RBI's, led by seven from both
Kevin Suarez and preseason All-American
Brandon Gomez.
Coming off a 21-homer campaign as a junior, Gomez has already recorded three on the young season following his third career multi-homer effort against Tusculum in the Sharks' 2017 debut last Friday.
After outscoring its opponents by a combined 26-4 margin through the opening three games, Nova Southeastern received its first true test on Sunday, but remained unbeaten thanks to a walk-off single in the 11
th inning by newcomer
Jeremy Vasquez. The left-handed hitting first baseman by way of the University of Florida has already proven to be a key addition for the Sharks, logging three multi-hit games last weekend including a pair of dingers in just 12 official at-bats.
Although the bats stole the spotlight, Nova Southeastern's pitching staff did more than its fair share as well – most notably its bullpen. In 13 innings of work thus far, Sharks' relievers have yielded just one run on seven hits, holding Barry scoreless through 6.1 innings after the Buccaneers totaled seven runs through the first 4.2 innings Sunday.
St. Thomas (Fla.) has reeled off victories in three of its first four ball games, tallying 11-plus runs in each of its wins. Leading the Bobcats' high-powered offense is outfielder Oscar Rodriguez, who is off to a torrid .632 start at the plate to go along with four RBI's and six runs scored.
Amidst its season-high 12-game winning streak, NSU used six strong innings on the mound from southpaw
Jonny Ortiz to beat St. Thomas (Fla.) 5-2 in its lone meeting with the Bobcats in 2016.
