FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – For the third consecutive year, the Nova Southeastern University baseball program has seen three of it's student-athletes drafted into the Major League Baseball draft. Jancarlos Cintron, Jeremy Vasquez, and Joe DiBenedetto all heard their names called on Wednesday afternoon, making their life-long dream of becoming professional baseball players come to life. The NSU baseball program has now had 21 players drafted in the MLB Draft, 13 of which have been selected since 2011 under head coach Greg Brown.
"Professional baseball has looked fondly on our players and today's results are another example of the type of growth players are having in our program," said Brown. "It is great to have three players drafted and get the opportunity to fulfill lifelong dreams. Yankee, Jeremy, and Joe all well deserving and our entire Shark Family are proud them. However, I would be remised if I did not say that I felt that this year's roster depth has even more players that are worthy of playing professional baseball and I am hopeful that a couple of them get free agent opportunities. It is a great reflection of our program's expectations when three players drafted feels like a slight underachievement. We will continue to develop the Shark Way and challenge our players to grow exponentially as a student, a ball player, and as a person. When they all become professionals in whichever endeavor they choose, I believe they will be prepared because of their experience at NSU."
Jancarlos Cintron | Arizona Diamondbacks | 24th Round | 712th Overall Pick
Brown's thoughts on Cintron: "Few players have played the game as passionately and as well as Yankee has in his two years. So proud of his evolution as a player. And the fact that Cruzy drafted him makes it even sweeter"
Jeremy Vasquez | New York Mets | 28th Round | 847th Overall Pick
Brown's thoughts on Vasquez: "Jeremy is a gifted hitter and someone who came into our program and adapted well to our hitting philosophy. His ability to revamp his approach and get to more power will help him establish himself as a prospect."
Joe DiBenedetto | Toronto Blue Jays | 29th Round | 879th Overall Pick
Brown's thoughts on DiBenedetto: "Joe had a great rebound year for us, after transferring last season. He has always had a quick arm and good stuff, however this year of development was critical for him and we saw him blossom as a reliever."
