FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University women's basketball team welcomes three teams to the Rick Case Arena this Friday and Saturday to compete in its annual Thanksgiving Classic. The Sharks will take on No. 12 Virginia Union at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23 before facing off against Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 2:00 p.m.
Three weeks into its season, the Sharks have started 2018-19 with a 2-1 record, picking up wins over fellow South Region members Delta State and Montevallo, ranking them T7 in the region according to the D2SIDA Week 1 Media Regional Poll. Currently leading the Sharks' offense is
Alison Hughes, who averages 17.7 ppg to go along with 4.0 rpg and 2.3 apg. Her scoring also ranks her second in the Sunshine State Conference.
Joining Hughes in double-digit scoring is sophomore guard
Hailey Conley, averaging 15.0 ppg. With their .529 and .528 field goal percentages, respectively, Hughes and Conley sit at fifth and six in the league overall.
Off to a 3-0 start to the season, the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union are currently ranked 12th in the nation after picking up wins over Cheyney University, previously 11th-ranked Edinboro University and Belmont Abbey College. Three Panthers are averaging double-digits, with Shareka McNeill on top with 21.7 ppg. Following behind her are Jasmine Carter and Nicole Floyd, who average 14.0 and 11.7 ppg, respectively. As a team, VUU is averaging 84.67 points compared to their opponents' 49.67.
Entering the tournament with a 1-1 record are the Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville. Steering their offense is junior guard Aryn Sanders, putting up on average 21.5 points per game. She also is pulling down 9.5 boards per game and has a team-high four steals. Defensively, Katie Speegle leads the squad with her 11.0 rpg and is the only other Charger averaging double digits with 10.5 ppg.
NSU also welcomes fellow Sunshine State Conference member, Barry, who will be competing against Alabama-Huntsville and Virginia Union on Friday and Saturday, respectively. For a full schedule, team rosters and links to live video and stats,
