GULF SHORES, Ala. – Opening its 2019 season at the DII Gulf Shores Invitational, the Nova Southeastern softball team fell twice, first at the hands of the Montevallo Falcons (9-0) before dropping the second, 2-0, to the Shorter Hawks.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE, 5 INN.):

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 1ST: With one out on the board, UM's Brianna Stella was able to score on an error by the Sharks for a 1-0 lead.
TOP 3RD: With runners at first and second, another error by NSU allowed the Falcons to add a run to their lead, before an RBI-single pushed their edge to 3-0.
TOP 4TH: Montevallo exploded in the fourth inning, scoring six runs on five hits. RBI-singles by Stella, Holly LaForce and Haley Barnette put up three runs before an error added another for a 7-0 UM advantage. The next batter, Kendra Buckley, tallied the Falcon's final two runs with an RBI-single to right field.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- The Sharks were held to just two hits, as both Suka Van Gurp and Tia Williams were 1-for-1 with a walk drawn.
- Starting pitcher Lexie Storrer (0-1) took the loss after tossing 3.1 inning with nine runs (5ER) on eight hits.
- Erica Winter finished the last 1.2 innings, striking out two of her five batters faced.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- NSU's starting lineup saw six new faces.
- This was the first time the Falcons and the Sharks met.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOTTOM 1ST: With the bases loaded, a single by Shorter's Taylor Martin represented the first score of the game for a 1-0 early Hawk edge.
BOTTOM 3RD: Leading off the inning with a single, SU's Sydney Poston was brought home on an RBI-double by Lukas two batters later for the final tally of the game.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- The Sharks were not allowed a hit through the seven innings, but drew two walks and were hit by pitches three times.
- Starting pitcher Miriam Schmoll (0-1) was handed the loss after going the distance, allowing two runs, both earned, on eight hits.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- The last time the Sharks did not register a hit in a game was Feb. 26, 2016 against Saint Leo.
- Today's loss brings the overall series to 2-1 in favor of the Sharks.
