NSU Opens SSC Play With 7-2 Win Over Florida Southern

The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon

LAKELAND, Fla. – Opening Sunshine State Conference play, the Nova Southeastern softball team took the first game of a three game series against the host Florida Southern Moccasins on Friday evening at the Chris Bellotto Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 2ND | The Moccasins were the first to reach the scoreboard as back-to-back RBI singles by Jadin Dewith and Celia Higgins scored the two leadoff batters for a 2-0 edge.
 
TOP 3RD | The Sharks responded in the next half inning, as Suka Van Gurp recorded her first RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Tia Williams, who led the inning off with a base knock to center.
 
TOP 4TH | With Keeley Mayers at second and Kayla Kight at first with one out on the board, Brooke Ferguson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The next batter, Van Gurp, brought all base runners home on a double to left field, giving the Sharks a 4-2 lead, before advancing to third on the throw. After a foul out by Miriam Schmoll and a walk drawn by Aubry Hernandez, Sydney Anderson used an infield single to score Van Gurp and push NSU out in front, 5-2.
 
TOP 7TH | Anderson led the inning off with a double down the right field line, and Sydney Lageyre entered as a pinch runner for the designated player. The next batter, Lexie Storrer used a bunt single to reach before advancing to second, pushing Lageyre to third. Keeley Mayers singled up the middle to score Lageyre and the next batter, Kight, reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Storrer to score for NSU's final tally and 7-2 winning score.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
 
  • Van Gurp finished 2-for-3 with four RBI while Anderson was 3-for-3 with one RBI.
  • Mayers was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Kight tallied one RBI and scored once.
  • Storrer picked up her fifth win of the season, tossing all 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
  • FSC's A Ehlers pitched the first 4.0 innings and took the loss, giving up three runs (1 ER) on four hits with three walks. K Beacham finished out the last 3.0 innings and allowed four runs on five hits.  
 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
 
  • Tonight's win evens out the series 27-27 all-time.
  • The Sharks closed out their 2018 season with a 1-2 series loss to the Mocs.
 
 
UP NEXT
 
The Sharks will continue the three-game series with the Mocs tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
