GULF SHORES, Ala. – Completing their opening weekend of the 2019 season at the DII Gulf Shores Invitational, the Nova Southeastern softball team earned their first two wins with a 6-3 defeat of No. 11 Alabama-Huntsville and a 2-0 shutout against West Alabama.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE):

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 1ST: The Sharks struck first, when
Tia Williams led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, then
Miriam Schmoll drove her in with an RBI single down the left field line.
BOT 2ND: They quickly added to their lead an inning later with a two-out rally.
Keeley Mayers was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by
Kayla Kight, then Williams followed with a two-run home run to left field.
TOP 4TH: Schmoll held the Chargers off the board for the first three innings, but they broke through and tried to close the gap in the fourth, starting the inning with a walk and single, before a three-run inside-the-park home run made it a one-run game.
Lexie Storrer replaced Schmoll on the mound and kept Alabama-Huntsville scoreless for the rest of the inning and, eventually, the rest of the game.
BOTTOM 6TH: The Sharks regained some breathing room for the seventh inning.
Keeley Mayers reached and advanced to second on a throwing error, then was replaced by pinch-runner
Nicole Hauck. Kight and Williams followed with back-to-back RBI singles to put the Chargers away for good.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Tia Williams and Kayla Kight each recorded two hits, one for extra bases, and combined for five RBI's in the game.
- The Chargers left 12 runners on base, as the Sharks escaped bases-loaded situations without allowing any runs to score in the first, second and sixth innings, the latter two with just one out both times.
- Entering in the fourth inning, Storrer picked up the victory with four shutout innings, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Williams' home run was the team's first of the season.
- The win was the first over a ranked team since April 20 of last season, when the Sharks defeated No. 8 Palm Beach Atlantic 3-1, and their first away from home since March 9, when they earned a road win over No. 10 Saint Leo, 1-0.
- The Sharks improved to 3-12 all-time against Alabama-Huntsville.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 1ST: The Sharks scored in the first inning for the second time in a row.
Brooke Ferguson singled to third base, but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a double by
Suka Van Gurp, who then advanced to third on the throw. Schmoll then drove Van Gurp with a single to right field.
TOP 6TH: The score stayed at 1-0 for four and half innings, until
Tia Williams led off with an infield single, stole second base, advanced to third on an illegal pitch and scored on an RBI groundout by Van Gurp.
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Lexie Storrer picked up her second win of the day with seven more scoreless innings, with four strikeouts and four hits allowed.
- Miriam Schmoll was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, contributing half of the team's six hits.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Storrer threw 11 shutout innings between the two games, allowing just six total hits and tallying seven strikeouts. Her scoreless streak is now at 13 total innings.
- This was the Sharks' first shutout since a 3-0 win over Barry on April 11, and their first away from home since March 9, when they earned a road win over No. 10 Saint Leo, 1-0.
- The Sharks now hold a 2-1 advantage all-time against West Alabama.
UP NEXT
The Sharks will return home to get ready for their home opener weekend, which includes a Friday doubleheader against Emporia State, the previous stop in Sharks' Head Coach Julie Lemaire's career, followed by another doubleheader against East Stroudsburg on Sunday. The action starts at 5:00 p.m. on Friday at the A.D. Griffin Sports Complex.
