Sharks and Lions Split on Opening Night Doubleheader

Schmoll allows one hit in game two for shutout win

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Returning to SSC play, the Nova Southeastern softball team drew a doubleheader split against the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday evening at the AD Griffin Sports Complex. The Sharks fell, 7-4, in the first game, before Miriam Schmoll helped lead NSU to a 2-0 shutout win in game two.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE):
FINAL: Saint Leo Lions 7 (W: A. Mounts, 10-6; S: S. Avants, 1), Nova Southeastern Sharks 4 (L: L. Storrer, 9-8)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 1ST | The Sharks grabbed their lone lead of the game in the first inning, as Tia Williams tripled to center field, only to be brought home by the next batter, Suka Van Gurp, on a sacrifice fly to right.
 
TOP 3RD | Saint Leo stole the lead away from the Sharks in the third, using an RBI-triple by Ashley Morris and an RBI-single by Shyanne DuBois to take a 2-1 edge.
 
TOP 4TH | A solo home run by Pauscher extended Saint Leo's lead out to 3-1 an inning later.
 
BOTTOM 4TH | NSU was able to bring it back to a one-run deficit, 3-2, a half inning later, as a sacrifice fly by Alex Suzuki scored Lexie Storrer, who pinch ran for leadoff batter Aubry Hernandez.
 
TOP 6TH | A two-RBI single by Alyssa Wash and an error by the Sharks allowed three runs to score, giving SLU a 6-2 advantage.
 
TOP 7TH | The Lions tallied their final run in the top of the seventh, as a Pauscher RBI-single made it a 7-2 game.
 
BOTTOM 7TH | Nova Southeastern hinted at a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, tallying two runs on another Van Gurp sacrifice fly and an RBI-double by Miriam Schmoll to make it 7-4, but that would be the closest the Sharks would get, making it the eventual final score.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
 
  • Williams finished 2-for-4, scoring twice, while Schmoll was also 2-for-4 with one RBI.
  • Van Gurp was 1-for-1 with two RBI and two sacrifice hits.
  • Storrer took the loss, pitching all 7.0 innings and allowing seven runs (6 ER) on eight hits with four strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 3RD | The Sharks were the first to score in game two, taking a 1-0 lead after an RBI-single by Sydney Lageyre allowed Suzuki to score, who led the inning off with an infield single.
 
BOTTOM 6TH | Leading the inning off with a double to left center, Van Gurp was brought home two batters later with a single up the middle by Hernandez to tally the final run of the ballgame.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
 
  • The Sharks were limited to five hits, as Lageyre, Van Gurp, and Suzuki were all 1-for-3.
  • Hernandez and Kayla Kight were both 1-for-2.
  • Schmoll earned the win after holding the Lions to just one hit, not allowing it until the final inning. Through 7.0 innings she also struck out four with two walks.
