HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Competing against an entire Division I field, NSU held its ground by recording its second round of 290 for the tournament. At 14-over par overall, the Sharks finished a clear 10 strokes ahead of both Drake and Stetson, who tied for seventh.
  • Middle Tennessee State registered the round of the tournament on Tuesday, firing an impressive (-17) 271 to pull away for the eventual wire-to-wire win. MTSU (-21) bested runner-ups Virginia Commonwealth and Mercer by nine shots.
  • The second consecutive round of (+1) 73 snuck Emanuel Olofsson into the Top-20 with a tie for 19th at one-over par for the tournament. The Top-20 finish marked the second of his young career.
  • Outside of a hiccup on No. 4, Javier Calles produced a rather impressive final round on Tuesday. The freshman closed the front nine with back-to-back birdies on No. 8 and No. 9 before sinking one more on the Par-4 16th to post a (-2) 70. His 54-hole score of three-over par landed him in a tie for 25th.
  • At eight-over par for the week, Mike Hay earned a share of 38th.
  • Just one shot off the pace of Hay was Tomas Millet, whose final round of 77 moved him into a tie for 40th on the leaderboard.
  • Like Calles, fellow freshman Joseba Torres made some clear adjustments between Monday's opening 36 holes and Tuesday's final round. On the heels of a 78 and an 80 to start the tourney, Torres closed birdie-birdie-par-eagle to cap his round of (-2) 70, good enough to climb from a tie for 59th into a share of 46th.
  • A tough pill to swallow with him competing as an individual, senior Victor Jimenez produced the best finish of any NSU player this week, tying for 16th at even-par overall.
STATS OF THE DAY:
  • Olofsson topped the team in birdies this week with 10.
  • NSU shot a combined 10-under par throughout the tournament on the Par-5's.
  • Scoring conditions in Tuesday's final round were the easiest of the tournament (73.48 scoring average).
BEYOND THE SCORECARD:
  • A final-round 64 lifted Campbell's Pontus Nyholm to a one-shot victory over VCU's Peter Gasperini to earn individual medalist honors. Nyholm finished with a 54-hole total of (-9) 207.
  • Jimenez's tie for 16th marked the second-best finish of his career.
