#24 Sharks Open Season with Pair of Sweeps

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - No. 24 Nova Southeastern began its 2022 season on Friday, taking on Concord and West Virginia Wesleyan in the Queens Invitational. The Sharks quickly handled Concord, sweeping the Mountain Lions (25-11, 25-20, 25-23) in the morning session. NSU then took on the Bobcats in the afternoon and earned their second sweep of the campaign, defeating WVW (25-22, 25-17, 25-9).

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Jordan Chessar started a 5-0 run for the Sharks in the first set, helping to give NSU a 7-4 lead, and forcing Concord to take a timeout.  

  • Following the timeout, Nova Southeastern rattled off seven consecutive points, including back-to-back service aces from Preslee Brooksbank, putting the score at 14-5.  

  • NSU scored the final three points of the set, as Chessar, Taylor Stockman and Nyah Pacely all contributed, to earn a 25-11 first set win.  

  • Nova Southeastern trailed 8-3 in the early going of the second set, before Head Coach Kacie Ehinger called timeout to stall the momentum for Concord.  

  • NSU battled back and tied the second set at 16-16, following a brief 3-0 rally. 

  • Concord briefly took a 17-16 lead, before the Sharks recorded 8-of-10 points, giving NSU a 24-19 advantage.  

  • Stockman recorded three kills during the rally and the run was capped off by a Hailey Smith service ace, before Stockman sealed the 25-20 set win with another kill. 

  • Nova Southeastern quickly took the lead over Concord in the third set, as Brooksbank added another pair of service aces, giving NSU a 5-2 advantage.  

  • Midway through the third set, Concord led 12-10 over the Sharks but NSU responded by scoring 4-of-5 points, taking advantage of three Mountain Lions errors to lead 14-13.  

  • The Sharks finished the season opening sweep over Concord after Chessar recorded a service ace, as NSU took the third set 25-23.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Sharks and Bobcats battled back-and-forth in the opening set of the match, as both teams sat tied at 10 following a Brooksbank service ace.  

  • Nova Southeastern took a 14-12 advantage following kills from Elizabeth Price, Stockman and Olivia Aniol.  

  • NSU won a competitive first set, 25-22, against the Bobcats.  

  • The Sharks took advantage of four WVW errors in the beginning of the second half, racing out to an early 5-2 lead.  

  • Nyah Pacely and Kate Mihacevich each added a kill to put the Sharks in front 17-7 midway through the second set.  

  • Two consecutive service aces from Price highlighted a rally to close out the second set, as Nova Southeastern took a 2-0 match lead after taking the 25-17 set win.  

  • Aniol put the Sharks in front 11-6 with a kill, before the Bobcats made four straight errors, extending the NSU lead to 16-7.  

  • The Sharks dominated the Bobcats in the third and final set of the match with a 25-9 set win.  

UPCOMING 

No. 24 Nova Southeastern returns to the court on Sat., Aug. 27 to take on Mount Olive and North Greenville beginning at 10 a.m.
