#NSU50 Top Moment No. 9: Baseball and Volleyball Win First Conference Titles

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. The #NSU50 "Top Moments in NSU Athletics History" continues with the ninth moment on the list: Nova baseball and volleyball win first conference title.
November, 1993

The 1993-94 athletic year was a landmark time in the history of Nova and NSU athletics. Although the Sharks had previous team success in men's soccer and volleyball, NSU formed itself as an all-around successful program with a fall conference championship in volleyball and a spring title in baseball, the first for both program.

The volleyball team had its most successful season to date in 1993, going 30-9, which is still the program record for wins in a season. The Knights were a shock to the volleyball world, having never been nationally ranked in the NAIA. The team had a new coach, Peggie Moran, who came to Nova to be the head coach for volleyball and help kick start a softball program that would eventually begin in 1995.

Moran adopted a full team, bringing in only one walk-on before the year. She also held practices off campus at a gymnasium at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Despite the shakeup, the new chemistry worked behind the success of the team's lone senior, Natalie Kramer. The senior would put together the greatest statistical season in program history, holding single-season records of 568 kills, a .401 attack percentage, 615 digs and 63 block solos. In the end, Nova earned its first conference title, a spot in the national top-20 and a trip to the NAIA national tournament.

In between volleyball and baseball season, Nova University would become Nova Southeastern. The baseball team, under the leadership of athletic director Sonny Hansley, would usher in the newly merged school with the program's highest win total in history. The 1994 Knights won 43 games that year, a mark that has only been tied once.

The Knights won their final seven conference games that season, sweeping Flagler and Palm Beach Atlantic to take the title. NSU had a potent offense, led by Hall of Famer Claude Love and Tommy Dong. However, it was the pitching staff that made the team special. The Knights finished the year with a 2.43 team ERA and 12 shutouts, both of which have never been matched.
