Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 15 Florida Southern

Sharks record first conference loss of the year

Box Score

LAKELAND, Fla.
--Nova Southeastern University women’s soccer team’s (8-4-1, 4-1-1 SSC) eight match unbeaten streak came to an end as the No. 15 Florida Southern Mocs (9-3-1, 5-1-0 SSC) handed the Sharks their first league loss, 5-0, Saturday night in Lakeland, Fla.

The Mocs struck early, finding the net in the third minute of play. Princess Haley caught a through ball 25 yards away from Kristen Vollmer and kicked in the opening goal of the match.

In the 27th minute of action, Haley found the back of the net again to stretch Florida Southern’s lead to 2-0. Haley controlled a rebound of NSU’s junior keeper Chrissy Hy (Weston, Fla.) and netted the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal.

The Sharks struggled to maintain any offensive threat as FSC’s goalkeeper did not record a single save for the half. Of the four shots that the Sharks got they were only able get close to the net once when Briana Hanly (Fr., Bethpage, N.Y.) took a shot off the crossbar with nearly one minute left in the first half. After 45 minutes of action the Moccasins led the Sharks 8-4 in total shots.

Following halftime, Florida Southern kept the offensive pressure on NSU’s back line by keeping possession. Late in the 63rd minute FSC was fouled just outside the box and awarded a direct free kick from 25 yards away. The Sharks lined up four people but FSC’s Kara Moore put the match out of reach by finding the high left corner of the net.

Florida Southern netted in two more goals, both off through balls, with less than 25 minutes left in the second half to end the victory at 5-0. The fourth goal was scored by Alyssa Abrahamsen off a through ball from Princess Haley. The last goal of the match was scored off a cross from Emily Griffith to Kerri-Ann Brown.

Overall, Florida Southern led 6-2 in shots-on-goal, while edging the Sharks in corners 4-2 for the match.

NSU keeper Hy recorded one save, bumping her season total to 60 on the year. The back line for the Moccasins held its ground the entire game only forcing its keeper to make two saves.

The Sharks will close its 2010 home schedule against Lynn on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the NSU Soccer Complex. Prior to the game the NSU women’s soccer program will honor its seven seniors during the annual Senior Day activities.
