MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University rowing team wrapped up its fall season Saturday morning, Nov. 13 at the FIRA Fall Classic in Melbourne, Fla. The Sharks competed in four races, winning three and finished second in one race.
“It was a good day,” said head coach John Gartin. “I was proud of the fact that top-to-bottom we did well.”
Leading the way for the Sharks in boat “A” during the varsity eight race was coxswain Elizabeth Tortorici, Samantha Moriaty, Stephanie Hauck, Alyssa O’Donnell, Jessica Sutter, Lauren Travis, Elizabeth Seminario, Lauren Boudreau and Mallorie Reinecke with a delta time of 11:48 for first place. Nova Southeastern’s boat “C” finished fourth with a delta time of 12:11 while NSU’s boat “B” came in fifth with a delta time of 12:33 respectively.
In the freshman/novice four race, NSU was led by coxswain Caroline Kelley’s boat of Katie Dabrowski, Taylor Van Horn, Catherine Plesko, and Megan Mcclenathan who finished in first place with a delta time of 13:02, 1:35 better than the second place finisher. The Sharks boat “B” led by coxswain Maria Callejas, finished sixth with a delta time of 16:46.
NSU raced four boats in the varsity four race taking second, fourth, seventh, and eighth respectively. Boat “A” led by coxswain Elizabeth Tortorici finished in second place with a time of 13:20, four seconds behind Barry University’s “A” boat for first place. NSU boat “B” finished fourth, 16 seconds behind first place, with a time 13:32 while boat “C” finished seventh and boat “D” finished eight.
In the last race of the day, the freshman/novice eight, both NSU boats found their rhythm taking first and second place. Led by coxswain Kelly, the NSU boat “A” for NSU oared away for the victory with a delta time of 12:45, 1:09 faster than the next NSU’s boat “B” with a time of 13:54 to take second place in the race.
“The most exciting part was that all of our boats were in the mix today,” said Gartin.
NSU takes the water next spring, opening the spring regatta season at the Division II doubles back in Melbourne, Fla.
