FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Tuesday's Nova Southeastern women's soccer (8-3-2, 2-2-2 SSC) match against No. 21 Florida Tech (8-2-1, 2-2-1 SSC) has been postponed due to the threat of severe weather from the souteastern Gulf of Mexico. The match has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m.
The game will have a significant impact on the final standings and seeding for the Sunshine State Conference post season tournament. The top-six teams in the final SSC regular-season standings earn bids to the SSC Championship, with the top-two seeds receiving a bye the first round. Teams are awarded three points for a conference win and one point for a conference tie during the regular season to determine their conference standing. The Sharks are currently in fourth-place with eight points and have two SSC opponents left on the schedule.
The Sharks enter the match after an up and down week against tough SSC competition, defeating Lynn, 2-1, and losing to No. 13 Rollins, 1-0.
The win over Lynn marked the first time this season the Sharks trailed at halftime and rallied to win the game. The game-tying goal and the game-winner came from SSC Freshman of the Year candidate
Sierra Lelii (Seminole, Fla.). The game-winner was her team-high, third game-winner of the season.
Lelii is one of 10 freshmen additions to the 2011 Sharks playing beyond their years of experience. The class has scored 13 of the team’s 37 goals and tallied 13 of the team’s 37 assists.
Melissa Madden (Vero, Beach, Fla.), another outstanding freshman for the Sharks has totaled three goals and three assists for the season.
Against Rollins the Sharks were unable to reproduce another second-half comeback victory after allowing the first goal during the fourth minute and trailing, 1-0, at halftime.
Florida Tech is in fifth-place in the SSC standings after notching their first tie of the season and third scoreless game in a 0-0 match against Tampa.
The Panthers usually get goals from leading scores Kelly Whittaker and Casey Lademann. Whittaker has been a part of most of Florida Tech’s goals, scoring four and totaling five assists for 13 points. Lademann has totaled the second most points for the Panthers with nine, on four goals and one assist.
Defense is a strength of the Panthers, having shutout six of their 11 opponents and allowed 0.54 goals per game. Prior to the match last week, Tampa averaged three goals per game, third best in the SSC.
Mist Eliasdottir (8-2-1) is the anchor in goal for the Panthers. She has the second most shutouts in the SSC with six, has allowed six goals in 11 games and made 28 saves.
The Sharks have the luxury of two quality goalkeepers to choose from for the match against Florida Tech.
Chrissy Hy (Sr., Weston, Fla.) (4-1-0) started the previous game for the Sharks, allowing one goal and making five saves in 90 minutes. She has totaled 22 saves and allowed nine goals in 457:01 minutes in goal this season.
Michelle Fuerst (Jr., Armonk, N.Y.) (4-2-2) is the other quality option for the Sharks in goal. She has shutout three opponents, collected 24 saves and allowed seven goals in 739:33 minutes this season.
The Sharks are 6-2-1 all-time against Florida Tech, winning their pervious match, 2-1 (OT). Returners
