Four Crews Cross the Finish Line for Rowing in the Miami Mix

A Varsity 8, Novice 8, and two Varsity 4 crews finish in the Miami Mix.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University rowing team finished its second regatta of its non-traditional season with four different crews competing in the Miami Mix.

"Today's racing offered plenty of challenges and obstacles for us in the way of good competition and unfortunately a bit of debris in the water," said Head Coach Mary Lenington. "University of Miami's Varsity Eight and Barry's Four raced fiercely on their home course and handled the conditions really well."

"While stopping in the middle of the race is not usual in our sport, when you're dragging sea grass on your rutter you have stop before you drive your boat into anything. Our coxswains did a fantastic job of triaging the situation and keeping their crews calm and focused." Lenington added.

The Varsity Eight crew finished with a time of 16:29 as Miami came in ahead of the Sharks with a time of 15:08.

The Novice Eight crew claimed the team's first victory of the fall season as they finished ahead of Barry and Miami with a time of 12:28.

"Our Freshman/Novice Eight kicked off their collegiate debut as Sharks with an outstanding performance over a shortened 2 mile course," said Lenington. "Some of those women had not ever touched an oar until seven weeks ago."

"The freshmen eight had a very solid performance this morning," said assistant coach Rachel Sander. "I am very pleased with how the crew executed their race plan and how much effort they put forth on the course. This result is the first benchmark for this group and it is definitely a strong place to build from throughout the year."

Two Varsity Four crews competed for the Sharks in the event. Nova-A and Nova-B crossed the finish line with a time of 18:43 and 19:40, respectively.
