RESULTS

MELBOURNE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team (9-5-2, 3-3-2 SSC) dropped a physical Sunshine State Conference quarterfinals match to No. 24 Florida Tech, 1-0.

Ann-Marie Helgestad headed in the game-winner during the 78th-minute after receiving a free kick in the box from Paula Lillsjo. The goal was the jugular in a match featuring 19 fouls and four yellow cards by the Sharks, while the Panthers totaled seven fouls and two yellow cards.

Like their match on Oct. 19, at Florida Tech, neither team allowed a goal in the first-half. The Panthers applied plenty of pressure on the Sharks, attempting four more shots and three more corner kicks than the Sharks. Fortunately for NSU their defense was up to the challenge, blocking shots and making plays like Chrissy Hy's (Sr., Weston, Fla.) (5-3) spectacular diving save during the 43rd-minute.

Hy was in the zone for most of the contest; she played the complete game, allowed one goal and collected seven saves, three shy of her career high. She set her career high of 10 saves against Rollins College on Oct. 2, 2010, the career record earned SSC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Mist Eliasdottir (11-3-1) was credited with the win and the shutout for the Panthers.

The Panthers will advance to the SSC semifinals to play No. 11 Rollins Friday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. The match will be played at Saint Leo, the winner of the SSC regular season championship and host of the SSC Championship tournament final-four.

The Sharks will watch the NCAA Division II South Region rankings to see if they advance to the South Region tournament on Nov. 7. The top-six teams by season’s end earn trips to the NCAA South Region tournament, with the winner of the Gulf South Conference and Sunshine State Conference tournaments receiving automatic bids. As of the Oct. 26, rankings the Sharks were ranked fifth, with a 7-4-2 record against south region opponents.
