FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University Athletic Director Michael Mominey announced today that Mary Lenington will take over as the new head coach of NSU’s women’s rowing program.
"We are extremely excited to welcome Coach Mary Lenington to the Shark family,” Mominey said. “We expect that she will continue the tradition of excellence that has been established with our women's rowing program over the past nine years. Her pedigree in the intercollegiate rowing world speaks for itself, as she as gained valuable experience and knowledge with several championship programs across the country.”
Lenington recently completed a three-year graduate assistantship at the University of Texas-Austin where she helped guide the Longhorns to three consecutive Big 12 Conference Championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011. She becomes just the second head coach of the NSU women’s rowing program which began its first season of competition in 2003.
Prior to working with the Longhorns, Lenington served as Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for Williams College, Stanford University, University of Rhode Island, and the University of Central Florida. She also spent three years as the Varsity Lightweight Rowing Coach at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and led the lightweight women's team to their first Intercollegiate National Championship Title in 2004. Under Lenington's guidance, the Badgers won two more national championships before she left in 2006 to coach at Stanford University. Following Stanford, Lenington signed on to assist with Williams College for the 2008 season. The 2008 Division III National Championship marked the fourth title for Coach Mary Lenington's teams.
"Being a native of Florida, I have always had an eye on Nova Southeastern University’s Rowing program,” Lenington said. “After discussing the support for and commitment toward the academic and athletics’ programs at Nova Southeastern with Athletic Director Michael Mominey, I am extremely eager to begin working within the Sharks Department of Athletics and building from the speed this program has developed in a short time."
In addition to her responsibilities in the collegiate rowing, Lenington enjoys developing competitive junior athletes during the summers. As a Junior Development Sculling Camp Coach through USRowing, the national governing body for rowing, Coach Lenington enjoys growing and teaching young athletes as they pursue goals of representing the US in international competition.
A Florida native, Lenington received her bachelor's degree in organizational communications from Central Florida in 2000 and completed a Master’s of Education from the University of Texas-Austin in May 2011. An avid distance and trail runner, Lenington is married to Eric FitzGerald Lenington of Austin, Texas.
