MELBOURNE, Fla. –The Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team (4-7-3) ended its regular season schedule Wednesday with a road loss against the Florida Tech Panthers (7-5-3), 1-0.
Despite this result in an out-of-conference match, the Sharks will finish the regular season ranked fourth in the Sunshine State Conference. Their top-four SSC record of 3-3-2 is projected to garner the Sharks a home match in the first round of the SSC Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The tournament sites have yet to be announced by the conference office. Florida Tech finished eighth in the conference and will not qualify for the tournament.
The match was a defensive struggle, as neither team scored a goal in the run of play. However, the Sharks fell victim to a foul call in their own penalty box. The Panthers were awarded a penalty kick and took advantage of the opportunity, as Christina Edwards scored the game-winner on her only goal of the season. The score came in the 69th minute.
The penalty kick spoiled what was a career-best day for freshman
Amanda Kopale (Cape Coral, Fla.). Kopale, who has been the Sharks’ starter all season, faced a barrage of shots-on-goal in the match and recovered all but the penalty shot. She totaled a career-high 13 saves in the match.
The saves total was the largest over the last three seasons and the most since Sarah Glass recorded 14 saves against Barry on Sept. 8, 2009.
Kopale and the Sharks held the Panthers scoreless for nearly 70 minutes, despite facing double-digit shots in both halves. The Sharks pushed hard to tie the match down the stretch, but the Panther defense held the Sharks scoreless.
Stephanie Moench (Fr., Austin, Texas) had the Sharks’ best opportunity to tie in the 77th minute, but Florida Tech’s Paige Redmond made her final save of four in the match.
