Rowing Gets Off to a Strong Start at UCF

The Sharks rowed three strong races against the Division-I Knights.

ORLANDO, Fla. – After a full week of intensive training in Orlando during the week, the Nova Southeastern rowing team opened spring competition against Central Florida Saturday. The Sharks picked up two second-place finishes against their NCAA Division-I competitor in the three-race regatta.

“We had a solid week of training,” said head coach Mary Lenington. “Despite windy conditions, everyone stayed focused and got the work in that was needed.”

The weather on the water at Lake Pickett, the home of UCF rowing since 1973, was warm and windy. A cross head wind built throughout the day, beginning calm and picking up as the races continued.

Racing opened in the afternoon with the freshmen/novice four. UCF edged out NSU by a slight margin in the event, crossing the finish line with a time of 8:18, three seconds ahead of the Sharks. Competing for NSU was: Katie Dabrowski (So., Vero Beach, Fla.), Amanda Craig (Fr., Berlin, N.J.), Remi McClellan (Fr., Mullica, N.J.), Emily Maines (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) and Kelsey Obringer (Fr.,, Port Republic, N.J.).

The varsity four race featured five squads, with NSU’s ‘C’ boat capturing second place. In that boat for NSU was: Sarah Erickson (Fr., Sunrise, Fla.), Dayna Triana (So., Homosassa, Fla.), Emily Harrington (So., Virginia Beach, Va.), Jennifer McDaniel (So., Deland, Fla.) and Sarah Patterson (Jr., Winter Park, Fla.).

The Sharks also had their ‘A’ boat of: Heather Clayton (Sr., Mullica Township, N.J.), Emma Jordan (Sebastian, Fla.), Caitlin Mooney (So., Centerville, Mass.), Alyssa O'Donnell (Sr., Ballston Spa, N.Y.) and Deonnah Findley (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) finish fourth. NSU’s ‘B’ boat that came in fifth in the race featured a pair of rowers from the freshmen/novice four in Craig and McClellan, as well as Courtney Berger (So., Sarasota, Fla.), Abbey Schiavo (So., Northfield, N.J.) and Claire Kurlychek (Sr., Land O’ Lakes, Fla.).

In the varsity eight event, the Sharks placed third in an exceptionally close race. UCF’s top squad crossed the finish line with a time of 7:02.9 to win the race, while its second team finished in 7:11.1, just four tenths of a second faster than NSU. Rowing for the Sharks was: Caroline Kelly (So., Seaville, N.J.), Camille Evans (Fr. Orlando, Fla.), Lauren Boudreau (Jr., Waterford, N.Y.), Kelly Scott (Fr., Hobe Sound, Fla.), Victoria Ciccone (So., Brigantine, N.J.), Megan O'Donnell (Fr., Lake Worth, Fla.), Jessica Sutter (Sr., Key Largo, Fla.), Taylor Van Horn (So., Cape Coral, Fla.) and Stephanie Hauck (So., Somers Point, N.J.).

“This team is more cohesive as a unit and is going to continue to make progress,” added Lenington after the race. “We had a number of underclassmen step up into pivotal roles, including a freshman stroking during the varsity eight against UCF.”

The Division II Duals are next on the docket for the Sharks. That event will be held March 17 in Fellsmere, Fla., a location the Sharks had success in during the fall season, winning the FIRA Fall Classic.
