PHILADELPHIA – Competing against a field that featured some of the most skilled crews in the nation at the 2012 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, the No. 3 Nova Southeastern rowing team saw its varsity four capture its second championship in three years, while the varsity eight finished second.

“The Dad Vail Regatta is a prestigious and historic event and we were pleased to be a part of it,” said head coach Mary Lenington following the event. “There was a lot of great competition here and it gave us an opportunity to go up against good crews outside of our region.”

Competition for the Sharks began Saturday morning with two semifinal races, the varsity pair and varsity four. In a six-boat semifinal heat, NSU’s varsity pair, Kelsey Obringer (Fr., Port Republic, N.J.) and Caitlin Mooney (So., Centerville, Mass.), captured a third-place finish to earn a spot in the afternoon’s final. Obringer and Mooney finished just over three seconds behind runner-up Tampa with a time of 8:17.92. Massachusetts won the semifinal with a time of 8:04.67.

In the finals, the Shark’s varsity pair slowed slightly from their semifinal mark and took seventh place in the event.

The Sharks’ varsity four boat of: coxswain Heather Clayton (Sr., Mullica Township, N.J.), Sarah Patterson (Jr., Winter Park, Fla.), Amanda Craig (Fr., Berlin, N.J.), Remi McClellan (Fr., Mullica, N.J.) and Jessica Sutter (Sr., Key Largo, Fla.) left no doubt that they would be competing in the finals, winning their semifinal heat with a time of 7:30.45. Second-place Florida State also earned a spot in the finals with a time of 7:34.09.

In the finals Saturday afternoon, the Sharks’ varsity four continued to row efficiently and aggressively, leading to a first-place finish with a time of 7:43.40. NSU topped second-place Bowdoin by just under four seconds, as the Polar Bears notched a time of 7:47.38.

NSU’s varsity eight wrapped up racing for the Sharks’, competing in the finals that featured six boats in the late stages of the regatta. The Sharks battled throughout the 2000-meter course, leading through the first half before No. 4 Mercyhurst made a late push to edge the Sharks for the victory. The Lakers came across the finish line with a time of 6:59.64, while the Sharks concluded the race just seconds later with a finishing mark of 7:03.91.

“Mercyhurst is a very strong crew and they put up a great race in the varsity eight, as did Central Oklahoma,” commented Lenington.

The Sharks’ varsity eight featured: coxswain Caroline Kelly (So., Seaville, N.J.), Stephanie Hauck (So., Somers Point, N.J.), Lauren Boudreau (Jr., Waterford, N.Y.), Taylor Van Horn (So., Cape Coral, Fla.), Victoria Ciccone (So., Brigantine, N.J.),  Megan O'Donnell (Fr., Lake Worth, Fla.),  Alyssa O'Donnell (Sr., Ballston Spa, N.Y.) Camille Evans (Fr. Orlando, Fla.) and Mallorie Reinecke (Jr., East Amherst, N.Y.).

NSU will now turn its attention to the NCAA Division-II Rowing selection show scheduled for Monday, May 14 at 5 p.m. The show can be seen live on NCAA.com, as the field for the 2012 NCAA Championships is revealed. The championship event is set to be held May 25-27 on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.

“The Sharks performed well overall, the varsity four had a phenomenal race today,” said Lenington. “We are looking forward to the NCAA Championships at the end of the month and we are going to be looking to pick up some extra speed in the coming weeks to go up against Mercyhurst and the rest of the field at NCAA Championships.”
